Church of Saint Francis
St. Francis Church, in Fort Kochi (Fort Cochin), Kochi, originally built in 1503, is one of the oldest European churches in India and has great historical significance as a mute witness to the European colonial struggle in the subcontinent. The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama died in Kochi in 1524 when he was on his third visit to India. His body was originally buried in this church, but after fourteen years his remains were removed to Lisbon.
Chinese Fishing Nets
Chinese fishing nets(Cheena vala)are a type of stationary lift net in India. They are fishing nets that are fixed land installations for fishing. While commonly known as Chinese fishing nets in India, the more formal name for such nets is shore operated lift nets. Huge mechanical contrivances hold out horizontal nets of 20m or more across. Each structure is at least 10m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end which is operated by a team of up to six fishermen. While such nets are used throughout coastal southern China and Indochina, in India they are mostly found in the Indian cities of Kochi and Kollam, where they have become a tourist attraction. This way of fishing is unusual in India and almost unique to the area, as it was introduced by Chinese explorers who landed there in the 14th century. Indeed, one interpretation of city name Kochi is ‘co-chin', meaning like China

We had an amazing tour of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry with Shuhaib. He is a friendly, experienced and knowledgeable guide and a safe driver. His tuk-tuk was great - very clean and comfy. He showed us the main tourist sites, introduced us to locals and helped us with logistics including getting to an ATM. He was great with our kids and let them have a go at driving. We exchanged numbers and used his taxi service in the evening to go to a restaurant. We highly recommend!

We thought of doing it free and easy at first until we were approached by Ajumal. He drove and brings us around Fort Kochi and even helps us to book the kind of itinerary we wanted to experience. The best part of all, he was with us throughout the day, AM to PM. Awesome and fantastic guide cum auto driver. Thumbs up!

Shuhaib was the best introduction to Fort Kochi anybody could have. He went above and beyond any expectations and spent the entire day showing us all the spots, the hidden ones that nobody knew about, and looked out for us in every way! We got to Fort Kochi through water metro from Ernakulam and met him there where he took us to various churches, historic laundromats, spice markets, temples, beaches, and so much more. I don't think I would have seen a fraction of places he took us to if I were to travel alone. He was incredibly attentive and added stops for our personal needs throughout the day. In short, it is well worth your money to take a tuktuk, and try to find Shuhaib if you can!
