A trip down the Kenai River canyon (Jim’s Landing to Skilak Lake) takes you deep into the heart of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. It is part of the upper river, and classified as drift only. It is comprised of the last three miles of the upper Kenai River and flows into beautiful Skilak Lake. This less-traveled section has some of the most dramatic Alaskan scenery as well as extremely productive trout waters. Here, nice rainbow trout and Dolly Varden congregate with spawning salmon to eat their eggs and get fat! Kenai River Canyon trips are weather dependent. The boat take-out is at the other end of Skilak Lake, and high winds coming off the Harding Ice Field can make crossing Skilak Lake unsafe. A decision to complete the canyon will be finalized the day of the prospective float.

We have been fishing with JJ and his team for years, booking multiple days each year. Each year, we typically have someone in our group that has never held a fly rod. JJ does an excellent job helping our first timers with the proper technics and makes sure they catch plenty of fish. I'm looking forward to our next trip with JJ and Brandon.

What an amazing day trout fishing! These guides know where the fish are and how to catch them. Two of us caught and released at least nine fish between 20 and 26 inches; and plenty less than 15. These guides fish top level gear, are professional and very accommodating. I highly recommend fishing with Kenai River Trout Anglers. A special thank you to our guide, Mike! He worked hard for us and loves what he does.

JJ took on by far the best trip I’ve ever been on. We took home over 50lbs of sockeye salmon fillets. He’s is so professional yet very/personable. He taught us how to catch them and we hooked into a pile of salmon. While teaching us about the river and Coopers Landing. So amazing

Once again, an exceptional day was delivered by JJ Brown and his new lieutenant Brandon. I was hosting a first-time Arizona family on a 10-day RV trip and took no chances by hiring Kenai River Trout Anglers. The coordination, equipment and expertise was second-to-none! This was our fourth booking with them and there will be more. The families enjoyed the catch/release of four different species and two brown bear encounters (from a safe distance). Book early as JJ Brown is in high demand!

Our tour guide Brandon was amazing! We are local Alaskan’s and our goal was to take some fish home and he made sure we did! We all got some pretty good catches, he explained everything great, and we got to try multiple types of fishing which was fun to learn/relearn. Make sure you bring plenty of snacks/water bottles, your license, and we learned the hard way sunscreen wouldve been great as 3/4 of us got a little burnt even with overcast clouds. Also a change of clothes in the car was only needed for one of us as our gear had a small leak that made fresh socks/pants much welcomed after 8 hours unknowingly soaking. Overall great trip though and we all had a really fun time fishing and taking in the sites of our home state!

JJ didn’t hesitate to accommodate my large party with multiple boats floating the canyon. We quickly got on the sockeye and had great luck thanks to Brandon. I had a limit in the first two hours. He was a great guide with terrific insight and the skills needed to navigate the upper Kenai. We will be booking with JJ again for sure

I have been going each year with my dad and uncle for 6 years on the Kenai River float with JJ Brown for trout in September. This guide knows the Kenai River better than anyone. He will get you up before the sun rises to get to the best water--and it's always good. JJ is hardworking, good company, and good luck. Not to mention the fishing is any angler's dream.

Took my father and nephew on the drift boat trip with Matt. It was the first time to ALASKA for my nephew and first time ever with a fly rod for them and we still caught a ton a fish! Matt put us on fish all day long and had the best view and we saw a bunch of wilflife.

Being able to see Alaska from the river is amazing…but to then add in a day with Kenai River Trout Anglers-priceless! We started hitting fish real quick and all in our party brought fighters into the boat. This was one of my top 10 Alaska days! Never fished before-they’ve got you…experienced fisher-your trip will be one of your most memorable! Enjoy every minute.
