I am a 20 year resident of the Mojave Desert and log 200 miles annually on foot within Joshua Tree National Park. Over the years and miles I've cultivated an awareness of landscape, ecological systems, and local culture that when contextualized by the trail becomes a narrative experience I'm eager to share.
I landed in Joshua Tree after dropping out of college in 2001. Back then you arrived by chance or a friend of a friend said you had to check out the rocks, feel the energy, and camp under the stars.
I fell in with the gathering characters, an assortment of dirtbag climbers, avant artists, practical new age visionaries, and entrepreneurs...an amalgam of identities that would go on to create the image of the High Desert that is so coveted today.
I am legally permitted to guide within Joshua Tree National Park and happy to host you. I know my stuff and I want you to know it too.

Prior to my experience hiking with Wandering Mojave, I had never been a fan of desert landscapes. However, I was at a conference in LA and knew I wanted to visit as many national parks as I can, so I chose to schedule a trip to Joshua Tree. Since I only had one day in Joshua Tree and wanted to make the most of it, I decided to hire Wandering Mojave, which ended up being the best decision and so worth my money. I told Travis I wanted to go on a long hike deep into the park where tourists don’t usually go and that I love climbing mountains. I trusted him to plan our full day hike, and he did not disappoint! He made me appreciate and respect the high desert way more than I thought I could. Travis’ passion for desert ecosystems was so evident and contagious. I learned so much about the flora, fauna, rocks, and history of the park. I highly recommend him to anyone venturing to this park who really wants to immerse themselves in the high desert and experience more than just those standard pull-off stops along the side of the road in a national park. My first hiking guide experience will certainly not be my last, thanks to my amazing experience with Travis!

This hike was very personalized, informative, and allowed us to learn more about the wonders, and hazards, that Joshua Tree National Park has to offer. Our guide, Sarah, was very attentive to our needs and expectations of this guided hike and provided us with an exceptional tour of an area of the park we would not have experienced without her expertise.

I traveled solo to Joshua Tree and had one of the most memorable experiences of my life getting to explore the park with my guide, Sarah. She was so incredibly knowledgeable about the park, its geology, the plants and animals we saw, and the area in general. She is a local and it’s very evident that she knows her stuff. We had a wonderful day exploring the rock formations in the Wonderland, and Sarah was always so supportive in making sure I felt safe and comfortable with anything we did. She lent me a raincoat when we experienced some unexpected snow on the peaks, and she even drove me around in her car to explore some of the more distant parts of the park. I learned so much about the park and the area after our full-day hike, and this experience has inspired me to continue traveling and visiting more amazing places. Just wish I could take Sarah with me to show me around all these parks! She was truly the best guide I could have had for the trip, and this experience was one of the highlights of my solo trip to So Cal. Highly recommend or for sure!

Thank you Travis for the outstanding naturalist hiking experience. My husband, 19 y/o son and I loved every minute of your knowledge on desert botany, geology, entomology, Native American history and overall love of beautiful Joshua Tree NP. Highlight of our trip

I can’t think of a better guide than Travis . We spent 2.5 days exploring three parts of Joshua Tree National Park with him and were astounded by his enthusiasm, knowledge, curiosity, and kindness. He offered the perfect blend of education and silence so we could appreciate the incredible natural beauty of JT. Especially appreciated how he was so many aspects of geography, plants, anthropology, climate and much more into an educational lesson which helped cement everything that we learned and Our time exploring with Travis also taught us a lesson that we knew, but weren’t mindful of: that every step we take is important and that we need to be mindful of how we affect the world around us and how seemingly small differences in where we step and what we do can affect worlds. It's incredibly empowering and a great responsibility that we appreciated. Thank you again for a special time.

Three of us hired Travis for 3 full day hikes in Joshua Tree Nat Park, and I also hired him for a full day hike in Joshua Tree. Each day, Travis guided us through totally different sections of the park. As Travis told us, Joshua Tree is his hobby, and he obviously delights in “all things in the park” (flowers, trees, shrubs, grasses, insects, rocks, the park’s history and some of the characters who passed through the park...). We enjoyed his relaxed, friendly way of leading us, helping us learn about the wonders of Joshua tree, and always felt safe with him.

My husband and I scheduled an all day trip in Joshua Tree National Park. Our guide, Travis, was full of information to share with us. He showed us blooming wildflowers, trees, cacti, petroglyphs, birds, insects, and more. We visited the Cottonwood, Porcupine Wash, Challa Garden, and Lost Horse areas. Each of these sites were special in their own way but Travis made sure to avoid crowds. Exploring these sites with him was wonderful and educational, and we learned a lot. The booking process was smooth (prior to our hike) and our questions were answered quickly via email. This company offers a unique, personal service and you will be happy if you chose it to book and plan your hike.

I had an absolute fantastic day with Hollis! The weather was pretty changeable – blizzards, rain, wind and the odd sunny spell – so she tailored the day to ensure that I still had the best possible desert experience. We couldn’t hike as much so Hollis took me to a number of amazing spots that showed a wide range of terrain and plant life, also stopping whenever I wanted to take pictures. Later in the day, when the weather really turned against us, we visited the incredible Noah Purifoy Foundation of assemblage art, which provided a different, but equally enjoyable, taste of the desert. Hollis is a friendly, fun guide with a wide knowledge of the flora, fauna and geology of the region. She’s a first-class communicator and terrific company! I highly recommend a Wandering Mojave hike.
