YehLiu Geopark
Yehliu is a cape on Taiwan’s northern coast best known for Yehliu Geopark, where sea erosion has shaped honeycomb and mushroom rocks such as the iconic Queen’s Head and Dragon’s Head. The area is mostly flat but offers little shade, so sun protection is advised during summer.
Chiufen (Jiufen Old Street)
Feel transported to this former gold-mining mountain town—once built by the Japanese and now a maze of history-rich lanes and alleys. Most of the charming streets are stairways lined with snack stalls and teahouses, and they can get quite crowded. (Tip: If you’d like to experience Jiufen at sunset or dusk, book a departure after 11:00 AM. This will make Jiufen the final stop, giving you time to enjoy the sunset views and evening lights.)

It rained and our driver implied that we could not go to the sites advertised due to the rain and the fog. He repeatedly stressed that a city tour was what we would do instead. I asked if we could see at least one of the waterfalls or natural beauty sites. He said that would take 8 hours so we wouldn't be able to do it and the city tour. We capitulated but said we don't want to go shopping or eating. He took us to the National museum where we had to pay for entrance fees and audio guide tours. We couldn't do a guided tour as driving through the city wasted an hour due to traffic and was so boring we fell asleep. After the museum, he suggested the gift shop. I said we didn't want to shop and he replied that we don't need to shop, we can just look. His other options included a local market...sigh. We didn't want to shop so we asked to go back to the cruise ship instead. The tour company's policy should be to offer a refund instead of doing a different tour in this type of situation. Other people on our cruise posted pictures on Facebook from all of the waterfalls and outdoor sites so their tour operator clearly had no issue going in the rain.

Our tour guide Cody was the best! He spoke excellent English and was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic, as well as making perfect recommendations for activities and places to eat. He was accommodating and knew exactly where to go to hit every spot efficiently and tailored the tour to what we would like. This was the best way to take a day trip from Taipei and we would highly recommend this tour and Cody!

This private tour was really worth it! Our tour guide Chouly accompanied us at each place, took beautiful photos for us and even gave us recommendations for where we should visit and eat. We got to go to Yangminshan, Jiufen, and Shifen.

It’s a full day so comfortable shoes, umbrella or rain mac (depending on weather) and cash a must. Jack Chou was an absolutely fantastic guide. He swiftly moved us through crowds, parked quickly, knew all the best photo spots and had a lot of knowledge of the whole area and Taipei in general. He booked us a fabulous table in Juifen overlooking the sea and was just a joy to be around. Thinking about it afterwards, there is logistically no way we could have seen all that and done so much on our own. A very worthwhile tour of Taipei and its surrounding areas.

We spent a magical day with James from Yolo Taiwan who took us on a day-long private tour of the sights north of Taipei. After picking us up at our hotel in Taipei, he took us to a magical waterfall, then Shifen old street where we got a sky lantern which we inscribed with our dreams and good wishes before launching it into the heavens. James found us a terrific dumpling house off the beaten path for a delicious lunch. Locals (and cash) only! After lunch, we went to Jiufen old street in the mountains near Keelung, wandering the lantern-decorated teahouses and alleys. Jiufen is a real life version of Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away. We wrapped up the day at Yehliu Geopark - a geological marvel right on the ocean. James was a great companion throughout the day, sharing his knowledge and warmth and leaving us with an unforgettable sightseeing day outside Taipei.

Had a great trip seeing various parts of Northern Taiwan. The best were the Bitoujiao Trail, Houtong Cat Village and Shifen. Paul was a fantastic tour guide, easy to talk with (English and Mandarin) and also gave great recommendations for places to eat in Taipei.
