Jurmala open-air museum
Jūrmala Open Air Museum is an attractive way to discover the daily life of fishermen at the turn of the 20th century. Here, you can climb on the decks of two authentic fishing boats, try your skills at the rope-making workshop, and visit authentic houses of fishermen. Around noon on Thursdays in summer, the museum offers a pleasant surprise to gourmets, as it hosts fish-smoking events where local fishermen show and tell about the traditional ways to smoke fish, inviting the guests to try the product.
Jurmala Beach
Jūrmala’s beach has always hosted a lively social life. In the 19th century ladies with parasols paraded along the promenades, while in the 1960s the white beaches became a colourful mosaic of bikinis and towels. Today, selfies in front of a magnificent sunset are common. But there have always been two sides to the social scene in Jūrmala, namely, that of the locals and that of the summer holidaymakers. Each group uses the beach very differently. The locals rarely lounge on the beach in the middle of the day; they’re more likely to head to the beach for a walk or healthy jog early in the morning or late in the evening. Holidaymakers, on the other hand, make full use of the beach from midday until sunset. Currently, Jūrmala has 11 developed swimming areas along its beach, of which five (Jaunķemeri, Dzintari, Bulduri, Majori and Dubulti) received Blue Flag certification in 2015, meaning that they meet stringent standards for environmental sustainability as well as water quality and beach management. The swimming areas also accommodate people with special needs.

About half an hour train ride from Riga Central Station with an old but charming train set through pine forests and suburbs to Jurmala. In Jurmala you can expect old wooden buildings, as well as modern villas, a few shops, as well as gastronomy and above all a kilometer-long sandy beach that invites you primarily to walk. In short: a nice day trip to the sea

It is worth dedicating a day to visit Riga to travel to the beaches of Jurmala on the Baltic Sea. The journey can easily be made by train. Extensive beaches with little mass. From the same Jurmala train station you can go to the Kemeri Nature Park which is also worth visiting. Virgin lakes and good scenery.

It is important to know that this is not a cultural tour. You will only get a driver to take you to the different places but he is really not a guide. Yo do the tour on your own. That being said we really loved the Bog, just beautiful. You can skip the fisherman village and Jurmala’s Main Street is worthy if you plan on found some shopping.

Lovely day trip with an interesting and informative guide who knew a lot of about Latvia's history as well as from a personal perspective, especially being under soviet occupation. He gave us a lot of time to explore beaches and wonderful expanse of bogland that you can walk through on a wooden walkway on our own, but took us to useful sites. He was also accommodating taking us back to the shops and giving us useful info about the town.

This was a terrific trip. Walking in the morning, a really top notch restaurant courtesy of our driver, and then some excellent visits to a small museum and fishermen shuts. The driver/guide Karlis? was brilliant: knowledgable, enthusiastic and really keen to make sure we enjoyed the day. Well worth doing.
