We begin by kayaking toward Austdalsbreen (glacier) front. Calving ice from this glacier leaves us with floating icebergs as we kayak across Styggevatnet (lake). After the kayaking, enjoy lunch with this idyllic view before walking on the glacier. We offer small trips so that everyone gets plenty of time to enjoy all of the features of this stunning glacier.

What To Expect

Styggevatnet (1,200m above sea level) is covered by snow from winter until early to mid-July. It is then the adventure begins as we kayak over the lake and hike atop the Austdalsbreen. We start trips on Styggevatnet, Jostedal, in early July (hopefully 11 July), and run them until the end of September. Once the lake has defrosted, we begin the kayaking tours. It is about one and a half hours paddling over to Austdalsbreen (glacier) with its 30m-high front that calves towers of ice into the lake. On the way, we look for icebergs that have calved off the glacier from the days before. After kayaking, we stop for some lunch, enjoying the view across the front of the glacier. We then start the glacier hike on the blue ice at the glacier front, walking around huge crevasses toward the centre of the glacier for a commanding view over the lake and the Jostedalsbreen National Park. We spend about one and a half to two hours on the glacier, exploring and explaining various features of this natural marvel. After the glacier tour, we walk back to the kayaks for our return to civilisation. For young families, we would recommend our purpose-designed Glacier Half Day tour.

Marcello and Darwin accompanied us on this day trip. It was beautiful but also heavy. An hour and a half of kayaking, tough for untrained arms. The hike on the glacier was easy to do and very special. The guides offered a lot of interesting information. They took good care of us, kept an eye on everything and kindly offered help when needed. The kayak trip back was really hard, we were glad to be there. But what a beautiful day, really enjoyed it. Only note; very strange that the visitor center is not open for departure so you can not use the toilets. Recommended!

We had perfect weather and were traveling with a fairly large group. The two guides were great - helpful, entertaining and nice. The kayak tour was a challenge for inexperienced driver memories like us. The glacier hike just spectacular! Great recommendation:)

From start to finish this was such an incredible experience and totally exceeded our expectations. Flavia and Tato were professional, friendly, funny, extremely informative and very encouraging to those that anxious Their boss should buy them a cider at the centre 😁. It was good to do something challenging (we are in our 60’s) but their instruction and advice, along with the equipment meant we had an incredible day. There was a mix of ages including young children and everyone said that they had a brilliant time. If you are travelling near Jostedal definitely make some time to do the full day of kayak/glacier/kayak.. truly wonderful 👍M&J

We did the Icetroll Kayak and glacier exploration and it was fantastic. Our guides, Jordan and Jonathan, were the best. They made it so smooth, super friendly and full of facts about the glacier. The experience went beyond what we expected and we felt out in the wilderness and away from the crowds despite being on a tour. A massive shout out and thank you to our guides and the whole experience. Highly recommended!
