This is the way to experience a glacier. The other option seems very superficial in comparison. We loved our walk with Hannah; we learned so much. You won't look at glaciers the same way after this experience. They provided the spikes and gloves (and walking sticks, other apparel if needed). We walked a bit more than 5 km but each tour is a little different. The glacier changes daily! Bring a bottle or cup to drink glacial water!

There is limited information about the hike available in advance so we didn’t know what to expect. The warm gear is ragged, unmatched and goodwill quality. The gloves are knit with holes so your hands don’t stay warm. Our guide was pretty unfriendly at best. She made a passive aggressive comment when we took a few photos while she was talking “well, it looks like people are more interested in taking pictures than learning so I guess I’ll stop talking”. She only stopped once, at the highest point of our hike to “allow” for photos but didn’t offer to take any for anyone. We had two young kids so we’re a bit slower than the group but there was little to no effort to slow the pace so that we could stay with the group. The glacier itself is stunning. I was disappointed by the lack of friendliness and poor quality of the borrowed gear.

This was the highlight of our trip to the Canadian Rockies. The drive from Banff to the Columbia Ice Field was amazing, then we arrived at the Athabasca Glacier, and met our guide, Connie. We only had rain jackets and it was pretty cold, so the crew let us borrow warm pants, a heavy jacket, hats and gloves. The gear was essential. Connie was full of energy and had a very positive vibe. She did a great job pacing our group and providing great information as we hiked across a rocky path, to the glacier, then strapped on spikes and made are way across the ice. We learned so much about what a glacier is, how it was formed and what the future holds. Sadly, this glacier is melting at a rapid rate, so you should go check it out while it’s still an impressive sight. I see some reviews mentioning the hike to the glacier being more than they bargained for. We found it to be a moderate hike. If you can walk for a few hours, have recently hiked more than two miles or do any kind of exercise you’ll be fine.

Absolutely fantastic. Great walk, excellent guide, beautiful surroundings. There are a few steep sections but on the whole it is no trouble for untrained hikers, especially on the glacier itself.

It was amazing! Our guide, Troy, was exceptional. Very knowledgeable and very personable. We experienced the glacier in mid-June. Be prepared with layered clothing, hiking boots, hats and gloves as it was nippy on the glacier. Rain gear is advisable but we didn’t need it. The hike is moderately strenuous with a distance of almost 4 miles round trip and almost 1000’ elevation gain - but there was a lot of stopping and information imparted along the way. It was an awesome experience!
