Of course, you could try and see the many fascinating cultural and historical sights of Vietnam's capital on your own. My advice, though, is to do yourself a significant favour and hire the knowledgeable, thoughtful and ever-helpful guide Phuc of Vietnam Creative Travel on this half-day customised tour. Phuc picked me up at my hotel, and together with a skilful driver, ferried me to many of the key landmarks of this beautiful city. The tour started with the beautiful Joseph's Catholic Cathedral, the character-filled old quarter, the serene Hoan Kiem Lake, the soulful Tran Quoc Pagoda, the austere Ho Chi Minh mausoleum, the unique Train Street (just as the locomotive was pulling in), and the awe-inspiring Temple of Literature. On my own without a guide, all of that would have taken me at least three days and probably with lots of missed connections and blind alleys. In contrast, Phuc got it all done in a morning. Not only that, but he provided me with rich insights on places to eat, where to buy the best Pho, and tips on the night markets and Beer Street. To highlight how thorough he was, I casually mentioned I was intrigued about the local breakfast drink - Egg Coffee - and he proceeded to take me to the cafe where it was first invented in 1946. When the skies opened up, Phuc was on hand with an umbrella and his driver always waiting conveniently nearby. For me, the best guides are those who give you not only the historical facts, but the context and personality of a new city and a taste of the culture. Phuc did all that, and more, making the often trying experience of being a tourist seemingly effortless. Highly recommended. By the way, Phuc is Vietnamese for happiness. How appropriate.

Phuc was an incredible guide. We had a wonderful experience exploring the city in a private vehicle which allowed us to see so much in a shorter amount of time. Was truly a great experience to get a taste of the city so you know where to come back.
