Head from the hotel straight to the tomb of Le Van Duyet, a beloved high-ranking general of the Nguyen Dynasty with a complex legacy. The ornate tomb is an oasis in the chaos of the city, sitting in a quiet park, complete with a temple and some benches where locals worship and relax. Explore the sacred structure to see the many fascinating relics on display, like a portrait of Le Van Duyet himself as well as mosaics of dragons, life-size horse statues and a stuffed and mounted tiger.
After such a peaceful start, accelerate to Ba Chieu market for a taste of local life. Walk through the bustling stalls of the wet market, busy with people shopping and bargaining for their daily needs. Few tourists visit Ba Chieu, so it has retained its authenticity, catering instead to friendly Vietnamese families picking through stalls overflowing with fresh meat, seafood, and produce.
Transition back into tranquility at Jade Emperor Pagoda, built to honor Ngoc Hoang, the supreme Taoist god considered to be King of Heaven. Its architecture is quite special, having been built by a community of Cantonese migrants, and it is today considered one of the most important temples in Saigon. Hundreds of spectacular artworks are scattered throughout the pagoda, including paintings, tile work, wood panels, statues and elaborate altars carved from wood, ceramic and papier-mache. Tortoises swim in a pond outside, some bearing shells marked with auspicious inscriptions.
The next stop is Le Van Tam Park. Once used as a cemetery for French soldiers and leaders of the South Vietnam government, Le Van Tam was eventually transformed into the public green paradise it is today, populated by shady trees and well-maintained grassy lawns. Unsuperstitious Saigonese locals come here to exercise and study in fresh air, away from urban pandemonium.
Even locals don't know about this tour's final secret. An ordinary apartment building, perhaps a little run down, contains a whole world inside. Open the door into a universe of cool cafes, hipster bars, fashion boutiques and eateries. There are new surprises on every floor, and it's a delight to explore the myriad of options behind every door. Get lost here before returning back to the hotel, a new expert in Saigon's best-kept secrets.
