Looking for a unique and accessible adventure near Mt. Fuji?

Mount Houei is the perfect spot! Formed by the great eruption of 1707, Houei is Mt. Fuji’s newest and largest crater, offering visitors a chance to walk right along the rim of a real volcano. The trail starts at the Fujinomiya Fifth Station and takes just about an hour, making it easy even for beginners, families, and anyone who wants a taste of volcanic hiking—no special equipment needed.

At nearly 2,700 meters above sea level, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views: gaze up at Mt. Fuji’s iconic summit, look down into the dramatic Houei Crater, and on a clear day, see all the way to Suruga Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The landscape is truly out of this world, with red and black volcanic rocks and sweeping ash slopes—perfect for memorable photos.

The trail is well-maintained and not too steep, so you can relax and enjoy the journey, whether you’re an outdoor lover or just looking for a fun, easy-going adventure.

I had the chance to enjoy a wonderful excursion  with this local agency Fun Stride  and it was simply magical. From the very first contact, everything was smooth: they respond quickly to messages, provide clear information, and organize everything down to the smallest detail. Despite unfavorable weather conditions, the staff managed to keep a positive and engaging attitude, making the day pleasant and full of great memories. They even adapted the program by offering unexpected new excursions, turning the rain into an opportunity to discover other wonders. They truly go the extra mile, and their knowledge of the area is impressive: they take you to beautiful places, including hidden gems that only locals can reveal. From the communication before the visit to the organization on the day itself, everything is perfectly orchestrated. You feel taken care of, relaxed, and free to fully enjoy the moment. I wholeheartedly recommend this agency to anyone who wants to discover Japan differently, with attentive, professional, and passionate guides. A big thank you for this day that will remain etched in my memory!
