Nakasendo Tsumagojuku
After a quick stop at a roadside rest stop to stretch our legs, we will arrive at Tsumago-juku post town. Here your guide will explain the history and significance of the area and the Nakasendo trail before setting off on our hike.
Nakasendo Tsumagojuku
We will then set off on our hike down the Nakasendo trail—one of five ancient roads connecting the de facto capital of Edo (Tokyo) with other regions in Japan. The trail was most prominent during the Edo era. Today, most of the original Nakasendo has been lost to time or converted into modern highways and railway lines. However, the section of the trail we will hike remains relatively unchanged from the time of the samurai. You will even see segments of the trail with original cobblestone. The hike will also take you by two waterfalls—the perfect place to catch your breath, feel the cool mist on your face, and stop for lunch. Recharged, we will continue our hike past a lone teahouse run by a local volunteer. You’re welcome to stop here for a sip of tea or exchange stories with other travelers.

We had a wonderful experience on the Nakasendo Trail thanks to our guide, Israel, and driver, Iwasaki さん. Israel’s explanations were engaging, informative, and really brought the history and culture of the trail to life. He led the group with great care and enthusiasm throughout the journey. Special thanks as well to Iwasaki, who drove us safely to Tsumago and back Nagoya, and patiently waited for us even though we took longer than the usual walking time. Their teamwork and kindness made the experience truly memorable. Highly recommended!

Our family of four had a great hike on the Nakasendo Trail. My husband and I are fit 61 year olds, and we were joined by our 2 adult kids. Rebecca, our guide, and Iwasaki-san, the driver, were professional, kind and knowledgeable. We picked up delicious bentos at Nagoya Station as advised, met Rebecca at the easily identified meet spot in the station. We walked a short distance, where the comfortable and clean van awaited. Know that you can leave things in the van if you overpack. The drive up into the Japanese mountains was broken up at a nice rest stop area. We picked up some nice snacks there to eat in the van. The hike began We at the Tsumago Post Town, and ended up at the Magome Post Town. We liked Tsumago much better; it is less commercialized and the buildings are original. Magome has more cafes and stores but the buildings are newer; it felt less authentic. In between the two towns is the hike. This was the highlight. We went in late April and everything was gorgeous and green. Wildflowers everywhere, and even a late-blooming cherry tree and purple wisteria. You should know that this is NOT a casual hike. There are a lot of ups and downs, extended uphill climbs, and stairs. If you have trouble walking distances or need assistance, this is not the hike for you. Definitely wear appropriate shoes and clothes, wear sunscreen and bring water. There is a stop about 2/3 into the walk with a nice picnic area where you will take your bento break. Plenty of clean restrooms, so that is not an issue. We were so glad we had this experience. We've been all over Japan, but the combination of history and nature makes this different from the typical tourist stops. This is the true Japanese countryside.

So glad that I joined this historic nakesendo hiking trail despite being my last day in Nagoya. Israel, the tour guide is a great delight and company!! He is friendly, experienced, and professional. He made the hiking more interesting by sharing anecdotes and history of the nakesendo trail, in addition to all the good spots to take all the picturesque photos. Iwasaki , is a safe, friendly and experienced driver. I would certainly book this tour and other tours from Snow Monkey Resorts again as they thoughtfully curate the tour in consideration of the customers’ safety.

This was a wonderful, intermediate-level hiking tour of 8km of the Nakasendo trail -- from Tsumago to Magome. I saw wonderful architecture from a long past era of Japan, as well as natural scenery that calmed the mind. Thanks to Israel (the guide) and Iwasaki (the driver)!

The tour was simply amazing. While you could walk the trail by yourself, doing it with Rebecca and Asano makes all the difference! It’s not just about traveling more comfortably, but also about all the insights and details you gain along the way. My favorite moments were the early start in Tsumagojuku, where we got great historical context, and the tea house halfway along the trail. Highly recommended!

Emily (tour guide) and Nakanishi San (driver) were incredible. This was a 10 of 10 experience. Emily was very knowledgeable and accommodating as we were with 2 small children. What a wonderful way to learn and experience the Nakasendo Trail. Highly recommend!!!

Well organized tour with helpful guide and comfortable transportation. The hike was at a pace that was too fast for us to take as many photos as we wanted. If I had known how easy it was to take public transportation to both ends of the trail, and how well-developed the trail is, I would have rather done this trip independently. The tour was fun, but it was a lot of money to spend for something that (as we later learned) we could have easily done without a guide.
