Himeji Castle
The castle was registered as world heritage in 1993. The castle is known for its specific architecture. The construction of the castle would represent sophistication of their defence system and political power. This was the tallest castle in Japan which meant that this castle represented once the highest power and sophistication of military power in the samurai period. In 1346 Akamatsusadanori started to construct the castle during the civilisation war in Japan many other people took over the castle after that. During the time of under different ownership the castle changed its shape but the Castle we can see today was the same shape as 1909. End of samurai rule in Japan, the owner of the castle gave the castle to the new-formed government. After that the government decided to use the castle as educational and historical display purpose. Because of that reason, the castle is now open to the public.
Engyo-ji Temple
Mt. Shosya Ropeway to access Engyo-ji temple will be suspended due to the annual maintenance from February 5, 2026 to March 18, 2026. Engyo-ji is Tendai sect temple on the top of the mount Shosha. The mountain is located the north side of the city. This is a very authentic temple which is constructed in 970. It has a resemblance of the very famous temple in Kyoto, which also constructed on the side of the mountain. The wooden construction of the main building and dining hall were registered as one of Japanese culture heritage. Also, it was one of the filming locations of Tom Cruise’s Last Samurai.

Our guide Hiro san, was highly knowledgeable and a native of Himeji. She communicated with me from the get go and planned the visit according to our interests. She met us at the station, explained the history even as we walked along the main road to get to the castle. She gave us a lot of facts on the construction and the history of the castle. Hiro san then took us to the Engyoji Temple - a very serene space and once again told us history of the place and shared her childhood experiences of going to the place. Hiro san was very patient, detailed and kind and made us feel very comfortable. She even dropped us back at the station! Excellent experience. Highly recommend.

I had a great day with Noboru as my guide, he has a great knowledge of the castle and its defences, exactly what I was looking for. He put together the itinerary I was interested in, with the tour also including the nearby Koko-en garden and Engyo-ji temple via the Mt. Shosha ropeway. The tour was well paced, and I learnt a lot about the area and its history, thanks Noburu! I definitely recommend the tour for anyone interested in learning more about the castle and the area.

We had a wonderful time with Yama-san today. We explored Himeji castle and the gardens as well as Nadagiku Sake Brewery. Yama-san was so wonderful and knowledgeable throughout our tour. He knows all the history and takes great photos for you so you don’t miss out on group shots. We wish we were staying longer to do another of his tours, like sake tasting. Look forward to our next visit and tour! Thank you!!

We had an amazing tour of Himeji! Our guide, Norio, was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and wonderful with our two kids. We were a group of seven traveling through Japan for two weeks, and this day was truly a highlight. We started at Himeji Castle, and Norio brought the history of the “White Heron” to life with great stories and insights we never would have learned on our own. Next, we visited the serene Engyoji Temple on Mount Shosha—absolutely beautiful and such a peaceful escape with stunning views. For lunch, we stopped at Nadagiku Sake Brewery, where the meal was outstanding. The food was fresh and flavorful, and the setting inside the historic brewery made it even more special. Overall, the day was perfectly paced, informative, and fun for both adults and kids. We highly recommend this tour—and especially Norio—if you’re visiting Himeji! Thank you Norio!!!

Yama was an excellent guide. We had some trouble with our digital tickets and at each step he smoothed the way and helped us get things done. He told us a lot about the culture and history and he helped us all day to see things we wouldn’t have seen otherwise. He was great with the girls and he was great answering my husband‘s questions. I would recommend him and his service at any time.

Yama was tremendous as our guide. He knows so much about the city and the castle. There were a lot of little things he told us in and outside of the castle. He also took us to a beautiful out of the way shrine. When we had spur of the moment requests, he accommodated us. Overall we had a wonderful tour.

The experience was a 5. Our guide, Hiromi Mizoi, made the experience great. We did a morning tour and then settled into Kobe for the afternoon for a meal. I think that’s a great way to spend the day.
