Tour of Hobbiton was fun. You might want to consider if you want to spend 2.5 hours each way to do the tour.

Not sure what exactly I was expecting as I have seen the movies, but I wouldn't call myself a fan - I haven't read the books. However, I had a really lovely day and I felt like a kid visiting Hobbit-land. The food was delicious and I enjoyed the Pale Ale.

  • There and back again- a Hobbiton visitor’s tale

Visit the outside of all hobbit holes in Hobbiton. Step inside the holes in Bagshot Row to see how hobbit families “really lived”. TREMENDOUS attention to detail, just like the movies. Our bus driver, David, gave ample commentary on our 2-3 hour trip from Auckland. I feel bad that the group wasn’t all responsive to his humor- not his fault. I learned many things about New Zealand and the area around Auckland from him. Because of large group size, we were permitted to take our Gray Line tour bus coach from the welcome center/gift shop/cafe down the private road to Hobbiton film set, instead of using the site’s proprietary green Hobbiton buses. Our Hobbiton tour guide, James (007), smoothly shepherded our large group along without a hitch, pointing out all the details we never caught in the films - from bees on the beekeeper’s mailbox to the bottles outside the town drunk’s house. He even had the backstory on the extended family in Bagshot Row. The tour concludes with a drink in the Green Dragon, where I could have spent hours just soaking in the atmosphere. Our tour included lunch - a Hobbit Feast - which was ample, but as expected not outstanding cuisine. All in all, a worthy experience after 9,000 miles of travel to get here. Kudos to all involved in creating and presenting this literary and film masterpiece! No Tolkien fan should visit Auckland without doing this tour! Now I have to rewatch the films and look for details I discovered first hand.

This was SOOO much fun. The different scales of the hobbit holes were hilarious and actually going inside a hobit hole was a real trip! I will say that if you're not a fan of the movies or if you're a little kid it probably gets old pretty quick, as it's basically a walking tour through a weird cottage core village where everyone is snapping a million selfies, but it is SOOO cute (and the lunch was super fun too!)

Sit back and enjoy the ride. The bus drive we had was very knowledgeable on New Zealand history and local land marks.
