Although large-scale trading had long moved elsewhere, Hoi An has been successful in preserving and restoring its charming roots and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in December 1999. Hoi An Riverside is the best place to be at night as the area is lit by quaint and old-fashioned lanterns, making it an atmospheric and beautiful spot. For those who love sea, sun and sand, Hoi An offers two lovely beaches five kilometres away from the town centre – a sort of holiday within a holiday.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hoi An was an international trading port from the 15th to 18th centuries that welcomed Chinese, Dutch, French, Japanese, Portuguese and Arab merchants, however small. but well preserved. Start your journey at Ong Pagoda - built to honor general Quan Cong, a symbol of courage and loyalty. Make an offer and the bellkeeper will strike a bronze bowl that sounds like a bell. Continue to Phuc Kien Assembly Hall, where Kim An Pagoda is located. With its history as a trading port, it's no surprise that this temple is dedicated to the goddess of the sea and protector of sailors.

Tradition is still very much alive in the Old Town, even though many of the old shops have been converted to modern businesses which are aimed at foreigners and tourists, Hoi An is considered as a living museum of architecture and urban lifestyle. Most traditional houses here are the combination of different architectures from different cultures such as Chinese, Japanese, French, and British and of course Vietnamese style.

Having Peter for the Hoi An sunrise tour was infectious. He made the early morning wake-up call worth it with his engaging commentary and friendly attitude. Peter's guidance made the tour a highlight of our trip. We had many tours before but this tour was exceptional. We can't recommend it any higher!
