Mami is a wonderful, patient teacher who made Japanese calligraphy feel accessible even for a beginner. Creating a custom fan with my name on it in the beautiful, historic Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Hall was such a unique experience. The session ended perfectly with delicious tea and sweets. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a peaceful, authentic cultural experience!

I joined a calligraphy lesson held at Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Hall, a beautiful historic building in Yokohama. It was a very special experience to practice Japanese calligraphy in such a lovely and traditional setting. At first it felt a little difficult since it had been a long time since I last used a brush, but the teacher was very kind and patient, so even beginners can relax and enjoy the lesson. During the class, we also enjoyed delicious tea and traditional Japanese sweets, which made the experience even more relaxing. If you’re visiting Yokohama and want to experience Japanese culture in a hands-on way, I highly recommend this class!

This was such a great experience! Mami is so kind, patient and overall delightful! My husband and I really enjoyed learning a new skill and practicing Kanji. She’s a great, highly trained teacher that walks you through the basics to teach you technique and history rather than having you just copy her work. This class was so refreshing and educational and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to experience Japanese culture and have a handmade keepsake. I 10/10 would do this again. Oh! And she introduces you to sweet and salty Japanese sweets and traditional matcha! #winning (the salty sweet were my favorite? Even better, she gives you a list of restaurants and places to visit in the Yokohama area! #double win. Personally, I think that’s a nice touch. Tip: If going in the winter, dress warmly as the room gets cold. If going during the spring/summer, fear not, she has AC.

This class was a true highlight of our trip. We really appreciate how relaxed and thoughtful the experience was. She helped us to choose what to write, then taught us with patience and clear instructions in English. The atmosphere was calm and inspiring, and working on the uchiwa fans together made for a meaningful shared memory. It was a beautiful blend of art and culture, and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

I really enjoyed the writing and Mami was very patient when teaching us all the different brush strokes. The history and knowledge was fun to learn and she also gave recommendations for us to visit after. The traditional sweets were really good and it was fun to talk about things we had done in Japan.

Our family had such a wonderful time at this calligraphy class! Mami was incredibly friendly and patient with all of us, taking time to explain the process clearly in English so everyone felt comfortable. We each got to choose our own kanji, which made the experience really personal and meaningful. She gave individual attention to help us write beautifully, even as beginners. Making the uchiwa fan was so much fun and gave us a special souvenir to remember the day. We had some tasty Japanese sweets and tea. She also recommended great local restaurants and places to explore nearby.

I went with my husband and friend and we had a wonderful time! We were all of different experience levels and Mami-san gave each of us personalized guidance starting with the basics. She helped us write characters / phrases of our own choosing and gave us samples of them in her own beautiful style as well. The tea and traditional sweets at the end was an added bonus! We all lived in Japan at the time but she clearly had a lot of info that would be useful for tourists too. Thank you Mami-san and I hope to learn from you again one day!
