I was intrigued when I read about Pitigliano and that Jews had lived here for centuries. That’s why I wanted to visit here. We were supposed to have Roberta as our guide but she had a family situation so she arranged for Paolo to guide us. We communicated on WhatsApp and had no problem meeting her. First she took us to the caves built by the Etruscans many years ago and explained how they built the caves and who they were. Then we drove into town and she explained how and why Jews came to Pitigliano. We explored the Jewish section of town and saw the synagogue and other sites. Paolo knew so much about the Jewish experience there even though she isn’t Jewish herself. We also walked around the rest of the older part of the city. I would definitely recommend a visit but you need a car to get there because it’s not that near to any major city in Tuscany.

I had a wonderful private tour with Roberta Marioni, visiting Sovana & Pitigliano historic centers and necropolis, along with a fascinating walking tour of the Jewish ghetto. Roberta is a wealth of information for the area and she personalized my day completely. Highly recommended!
