Chinese Fishing Nets
Chinese fishing nets(Cheena vala)are a type of stationary lift net in India. They are fishing nets that are fixed land installations for fishing. While commonly known as Chinese fishing nets in India, the more formal name for such nets is shore operated lift nets. Huge mechanical contrivances hold out horizontal nets of 20m or more across. Each structure is at least 10m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end which is operated by a team of up to six fishermen. While such nets are used throughout coastal southern China and Indochina, in India they are mostly found in the Indian cities of Kochi and Kollam, where they have become a tourist attraction. This way of fishing is unusual in India and almost unique to the area, as it was introduced by Chinese explorers who landed there in the 14th century. Indeed, one interpretation of city name Kochi is ‘co-chin', meaning like China.
Church of Saint Francis
St. Francis Church, in Fort Kochi (Fort Cochin), Kochi, originally built in 1503, is one of the oldest European churches in India and has great historical significance as a mute witness to the European colonial struggle in the subcontinent. The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama died in Kochi in 1524 when he was on his third visit to India. His body was originally buried in this church, but after fourteen years his remains were removed to Lisbon.

If your in Kochi India, you could not get a better TukTuk experience and driver. Having Niyas as my driver made my trip to Kochi. Not only did he take me and my friends to places we wanted to go, but he helped plan amazing experiences and would even get up early in the morning to drive us to yoga practices. Along with having his wife, do beautiful hana on our hands, he really made us feel like we were part of his family. Please say hello from Olivia if you have him as your driver ❤️

Nias became our trusted tuk tuk driver whilst we spent a few days in Fort Kochi. He was polite, friendly and helpful with recommendations for local sightseeing including the incredible spice market. He also went above and beyond waiting for us and storing our shopping safely in the tuk tuk. He is sweet and kind.

We had an outstanding experience with Niyas as our Tuk Tuk driver in Cochin. His knowledge of the city is exceptional, and his command of English made everything easy to understand and genuinely enjoyable. Travelling around the many sights in his Tuk Tuk was great fun, and he brought each place to life with excellent explanations and a real passion for local history and culture. Most importantly, having used his services twice now, we found Niyas to be completely trustworthy and professional. Based on our experience, he was better than the guides we have used on several of our previous visits to India. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone visiting Cochin.
