Chinese Fishing Nets
Chinese fishing nets(Cheena vala)are a type of stationary lift net in India. They are fishing nets that are fixed land installations for fishing. While commonly known as Chinese fishing nets in India, the more formal name for such nets is shore operated lift nets. Huge mechanical contrivances hold out horizontal nets of 20m or more across. Each structure is at least 10m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end which is operated by a team of up to six fishermen. While such nets are used throughout coastal southern China and Indochina, in India they are mostly found in the Indian cities of Kochi and Kollam, where they have become a tourist attraction. This way of fishing is unusual in India and almost unique to the area, as it was introduced by Chinese explorers who landed there in the 14th century. Indeed, one interpretation of city name Kochi is ‘co-chin', meaning like China

We had an absolutely wonderful time exploring Fort Kochi with Shuhaib as our tuk-tuk tour guide! Traveling with my family, we were looking for someone trustworthy, knowledgeable, and genuine and Shuhaib exceeded all expectations. He picked us up on time, drove very safely (super important with kids!), and his tuk-tuk was clean and comfortable. What really stood out was his real, in depth knowledge of the attractions and the rich history of Fort Kochi. He shared fascinating stories about the Chinese Fishing Nets, St. Francis Church, Mattancherry Palace, Jew Town, the spice markets, and so many hidden gems that we would have missed otherwise. Everything felt authentic and unhurried he even stopped for great photo ops and suggested the best local spots for snacks. Shuhaib is extremely trustworthy, friendly, patient, and went out of his way to make sure our family had a memorable and enjoyable day. If you're visiting Fort Kochi, do yourself a favor and book with Shuhaib you won't regret it! Thank you, Shuhaib, for making our trip special! 🙏 Highly recommend to everyone families, couples, solo travelers. 5 stars all the way! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Shuhaib made our experience in Fort Kochi very pleasant. He showed us around the area and was telling very interesting facts. He even played music and put some good lights in his tuktuk. He is very friendly and knows a lot of facts about Fort Kochi 😊 If I will come back I'll definitely do the tour again. Lots of love from The Netherlands

Shuhaib (Shu) took us all over Fort Kochi in a Tuk Tuk for several days. This is his hometown and these are places he knows well and people he cares about. Each day we looked forward to our adventures with him! And we learned so much! Shu is a kind and thoughtful guide, and he loves where he lives and loves to share about Kochi!
