It was a nice experience. Recommend to take drinks with you and/or snacks. During summer time it can get really hoy inside the train and it is 2h journey...usually.

Riding the Kuranda Railway was exciting with beautiful views. The butterfly house was very interesting & informative. The Aborigines dance & boomerang/spear demonstration were exciting. The cable car ride down had breath taking views.

Pretty cool experience ! Historic old train. Felt like I was stepping back in time. Amazing rainforest, waterfalls. Can't believe it was built just with pick axes and dynamite in the 1880s. My tip is to sit in the end carriages if possible, as they are quiet and the air is fresh. Up close to the engine might not suit everyone as it might be a bit noisy and smelly for some when going through the mountain tunnels.

We thoroughly enjoyed the skyline up to Kuranda and the opportunity to shop, visit the birds and the koalas on our own pace and not mess with a group or lunch break but after the spectacular train ride and rolling into Cairns, there was no one to pick us up and bring us back to our hotel! After watching all the other passengers roll up and get into their commercial buses, we had to walk close to a mile, in the rain, back to our hotel where they originally pick us up that morning. My husband even noticed the Down Under Tour bus wiz down Spence St. When I reached out to Down Under Tours, no one responded! What the what! Hey, we paid a pretty penny to go this tour and I feel they should have lived up to their aspect of transportation. We are in our 70’s and fortunately we could locate and walk to our hotel but buyer be ware!

The excursion is self paced. The tickets for pick up and drop off as well as tickets for the cable car and rail ride was provided. You have to experience on your own. No guided tour. The stay in the village was a little too long especially when it was hot and humid. Would have liked the tickets to have adjustable times. Felt stuck waiting to catch the rail to get to the bus. The rail ride and cable car ride were worth it.

The scenic of railway is very nice and good experience, only a problem is the temperature, the train really need air-conditioning for the customers. Too hot in the carriages.

The main appeal of this experience is going up by Skyrail and returning by the scenic train. Our Itinerary was as follows: 10:30 a.m. – Hotel pick-up 11:10 a.m. – Skyrail Rainforest Cableway (about 1 hour including stops) 12:10 p.m. – Arrive at Kuranda Village Lunch and optional visit to Kuranda Koala Gardens 3:30 p.m. – Kuranda Scenic Railway (1.5 hours to Freshwater) 5 pm Boarded the Bus 6:00 p.m. – Return to hotel Kuranda Village itself has limited attractions beyond cafés, souvenir shops, and optional wildlife parks. The scenic railway journey was the highlight, with enjoyable views of waterfalls and the gorge from designated lookouts. Overall: Not a must-do in Cairns, but a pleasant option if you have an extra day and want a relaxed rainforest experience.

A day trip to Kuranda and whilst there visiting the butterfly sanctuary and Koloa’s was nice day trip and also getting to see the baron rainforest and waterfall from various views through the scenic railway and sky cable was a nice day out. The transfer drivers were great sharing knowledge about the day and also general knowledge about that part of Australia.

The Kuranda Scenic Railway is more than a ride—it’s a living museum on steel tracks. Departing Cairns, the train winds its way up the range, climbing through tunnels carved by hand and across bridges that speak to the grit of the workers who built them in the late 1800s. Many visitors focus only on the waterfalls and sweeping rainforest views, but the train itself is the story: polished timber carriages, brass fittings, and the steady rhythm of history carrying you into the mountains. At the top, Kuranda greets you with its eclectic charm. The markets brim with handmade crafts, tropical fruit, and a laid‑back energy that makes lunch feel like part of the adventure. An ice cream in hand, you wander through stalls that reflect the quirky spirit of this rainforest village. The return journey is a different kind of magic. Boarding the Skyrail, you glide silently above the canopy, stopping at stations where boardwalks lead you into the heart of the Daintree. Here, you feel the rainforest from within—giant trees, filtered light, and the hum of life all around. By the time you descend to Smithfield, you’ve experienced not just scenery but a layered journey: the heritage of the railway, the creativity of Kuranda, and the living pulse of the Daintree. It’s a day that reminds you travel is about stories as much as sights and www.dachshundtours.com.au can help you create your travel stories!
