Of the remaining 2 hours and 45 minutes, 1 hour is alloted for a lunch break and the 1 hour and 45 minutes as time for backstreet walking around the spots and public transportation.

What To Expect
Higashi Hongan-ji Temple
Question: What is the "Pure Land," one of the most significant ideas in the Japanese Buddhism tradition? Place to find the Japanese "Pure Land" Buddhist Philosophy: This temple is located about 10 minutes walk from Kyoto Station and it is a head temple of one of the Japanese Pure Land Buddhism groups. Pure Land Buddhist philosophy has played a major role in Japanese intellectual and social life in history although it is less famous in the West than the Zen philosophy's influence on Japanese culture. In contrast to Zen Buddhism, which was popular among the upper classes, Pure Land Buddhism was popular among the common people. It has unique ideas of the heaven, eschatology, and salvation of sin-bearing people. That is why, Karl Barth described it as the paganism that most closely resembles Christianity.
Question: What is Shintoism? Place to feel Japanese Shintoist "pantheism" philosophy: Yoshida Shrine is one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto, and until 150 years ago was also the site of government sanctioned headquarters of Japanese Shintoism although it is not so famous today. Japanese Shinto is generally associated with animism, however, Yoshida Shrine is known for having established a pantheistic Shinto philosophy that developed from animism, and is called the most philosophically sophisticated Shintoism among Japanese experts and researchers. Here is my favorite place and you can feel Shintoism teaching far deeper than in any other areas.

5.00My son, nephew, and I spent a wonderful morning with Hiro on the Philosopher’s Path, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our time in Kyoto. What made this experience special was not just the beautiful temples, gardens, and historic sites we visited, but Hiro himself. He was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and easy to talk to. The pace was perfect—never rushed, never feeling like we were trying to check items off a list. Instead, it felt like spending the morning with a knowledgeable friend who genuinely loves Kyoto and enjoys sharing its history, culture, and philosophy with others. Throughout the tour, Hiro provided fascinating historical and cultural insights while also creating space for conversation and questions. Some of our favorite moments were simply the discussions we had along the way. His explanations added meaning and context to places that we otherwise would have simply walked past. We especially appreciated how flexible and attentive he was throughout the day. The experience felt personal rather than scripted, and he made everyone feel comfortable and engaged. If you are looking for a deeper and more meaningful way to experience Kyoto, I highly recommend spending time with Hiro. 5.00Hiro is an exceptional guide and our time with him flew by learning about Pureland Buddhism and Shinto beliefs whilst visiting ancient temples and serene Zen Gardens. Our tour felt more like an inspiring discussion and exchange amongst friends. Hiro took good care to incorporate our interests and we even had lunch together in his favourite restaurant. I'd highly recommend joining this philosopher's tour - a great experience.

5.00This was such a wonderful tour! It’s a must. Hiroki was a great tour guide. He’s so well informed, so knowledgeable and so kind. We had a beautiful day. The path of the tour he took us on was beautiful and perfect for us. Definitely wear comfortable shoes. Definitely take your camera because everything is so beautiful. We also had delicious food that Hiroki picked for us. The day was really wonderful and for most of the day it rained on us and it was still one of our favorite tours of our trip. 5.00We spent 4 days with our “Hero”. His impressive knowledge of japanese history and culture were amazing. Also, he is excellent at time management for the tours, and extremely flexible to make you happy doing what you really wish to do, without sacrificing the quality of the cultural experience. Furthermore, he is very amicable, witty, and funny. We feel like we have known him for years. Can’t wait to come back to Japan for another tour with “Hero”.

I really appreciated the philosophical portion of the tour and it was a pleasure discussing different philosophical viewpoints with Hiro. I felt like I was on a journey with a friend. I highly recommend this tour for those seeking a unique intellectual experience vs just looking at temples, of course the temples were lovely as well
