What To Expect
binglingsi grottoes is a series of grottoes filled with Buddhist sculpture carved into natural caves and caverns in a canyon along the Yellow River. It lies just north of where the Yellow River empties into the Liujiaxia Reservoir. Administratively, the site is in Yongjing County of Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu province, some 100 km (62 mi) southeast of Lanzhou.
Liujiaxia Dinosaurs National Geologic Park of Gansu
It occupies over 130 km2 (50 sq mi), and is located entirely within Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture. The reservoir's shores belong to the prefecture's Yongjing County (the narrow northern part, and the north shore of the wide southern part), Dongxiang Autonomous County (eastern part of the south shore), Linxia County (western part of the south shore), and Jishishan Bonan, Dongxiang and Salar Autonomous County (the small westernmost section of the south shore).

5.00My wife and me were traveling in China and wanted to visit grottoes on a way from Xi’an to Xining. We planned to take the first train out of Xi’an at 7:36 that arrived Lanzhou at 11:00 . Then out of Lanzhou at 5:00 pm to be in Xining in time for dinner. So 6 hours in Lanzhou to see the grottoes. To add - in November when the reservoir level is low and most of boat operators don’t date a passage. Some make think - a crazy impossible task? Not for Judy and her team! The guide Peter met us at Lanzhou train station and had a luxury car ready right away . It took around two hour drive to reach a boat station since you can only get to grottoes by water. The water level was extremely low but Judy and Peter found an experience captain that could sail in such condition . In about half hour we were at the grottoes. November is actually an excellent time for a visit as the weather is good - sunny and crispy and it is not crowded and we could have the whole place practically for ourselves. The grottoes are amazing and easy to visit. There is a circular path around caves dated from 7th century when Buddhism arrived and thrived in China. The highlight of course was a giant Buddha statue but don’t miss a sleeping Buddha in a small temple. We wish we could spend more time there but we had to leave to catch our train. Thanks to super efficient Peter guidance we were able to make the most of our visit . We will definitely use Judy service next time we visit China.

5.00I found Judy’s contacts online and had her to organize our trip (4 people) to visit the Binglingsi grottoes from Lanzhou, our guide Shirley and the driver Mr Wang took us for a wonderful trip, Shirley explained us interesting stories about the on way of the 3-hour driving and they were nice enough to have put the Liujiaxia gorge in our schedule as well which we didn’t request at the beginning. Shirley was passionate and patient with us during the whole trip. If you are the first time to Lanzhou and wanted a tour to the remote places, Judy’s discovery tour service would be your right choice.
