Fjallabak Nature Reserve
Do you want to discover Iceland’s magnificent highland nature with a local guide leading you to the highland’s most scenic spots? We’ll start our Super Jeep Highland tour by driving towards the legendary Hekla volcano or as sometimes called; “The Gateway to Hell”! From there we’ll continue onwards through Dómadalur valley, which leads us to Frostastaðavatn and Ljótipollur lakes. Only a few minutes away is one of our most picturesque stops, Landmannalaugar. This area is one of Iceland’s most reserved gems with its colourful rhyolite mountains and its geothermal bathing pool bordered by steep black lava fields.

I would like to commend Stefan Markusson of Southcoast Adventure for the marvelous private Laugavegur-Fjallabak Super Jeep Tour. Although the weather was overcast and moody with some light rain, my daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the beauty of the unique landscape. Our very skilled and knowledgeable guide allowed us to experience the rugged and varied beauty of the Icelandic highlands, while providing extensive information about the terrain and the geologic history of the area. He also shared amusing tidbits about explorers, adventurers, and modern backcountry hikers. Because Stefan immediately noticed my daughter’s interest in photography, he was conscientious about providing numerous opportunities for great pictures. He always stopped at places with wonderful views and perfect camera angles. During the 10-hour adventure the bathroom breaks were well timed—an important point for this 75-year-old lady. Additionally, the lunch we ordered from the company was tasty and quite adequate for us, although active hikers or travelers with teenagers might want to take extra snacks. The only thing that posed a challenge was climbing into and out of the very tall Jeep. A stool of some sort would be quite helpful for short or older people. We traversed rugged mountains roads, forded rivers, and drove to an elevation of over a thousand meters while continually marveling at the landscape. Although some of the back roads were extremely rough, Stefan navigated competently and kept us safe and comfortable at all times. He has the perfect combination of experience, knowledge, and personality for a guide, and his English is totally excellent. We particularly appreciated his willingness to answer our many questions about Iceland. I truly cannot imagine a better way to see the essence of the remote mountain area and to learn about Iceland, and I highly recommend this Southcoast Adventure tour, especially with Stefan Markusson.
