Leave Placencia at 08:30 am for a scenic drive to experience Maya culture first hand, participate in Mayan cooking and visit a Mayan cacao farm and processing factory.
The experience begins with learning to cook a meal the Mayan way on a fire hearth. You will learn how to make tortillas and tamales from scratch in a real Mayan kitchen. Take advantage of the experience to ask lots of questions about how the Mayans live, work, raise their families while you are preparing your lunch. The Maya are a proud of their culture and happy to share their stories. Bring your cell phone or camera and take video so you can share your new culinary skills with friends and family when you get home. Make sure you get the recipes!
After enjoying the lunch that you have just cooked, visit the cacao farm to see how the cacao is grown, harvested and dried. Then head over to the little chocolate factory to make chocolate from cacao beans the old fashioned way. Make and eat your very own chocolate bar.

As our guide, Kendrick brought contagious energy and enthusiasm. Mr Noel was the consummate driver. Sean quietly provided additional insights. Narcisso led us through the cacao growing and harvesting process. Mr. Julio's knowledge of cacao and of Mayan culture left me wishing that I could spend days, not hours with him. No wonder that British royals William and Kate were introduced to Mr. Julio during their visit too. Olivia made us feel more like family members than guests in her kitchen, encouraging and directing us in the preparation of a delicious meal cooked over a fire. A wonderful and memorable day that brought alive some of Mayan culture and led to a far greater understanding and appreciation of chocolate.
