The Battle of Long Tan
Long Tan Nui Dat battlefield is the most famous battle fought by the Australian Army during the Vietnam War. This battle took place in a rubber plantation. On 18 August 2016 a low-key ceremony was held on the site of the battle; more than 1,000 Australian veterans and their families travelled to Viet Nam to participate in the 50th anniversary commemoration. The tour will begin with a departure for Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province by minivan. The local guide will take you to the site of Long Tan Battlefield where you will visit the former 1st Australian Task Force at Nui Dat.
Nui Dat hill
Our first stop-over is Nui Dat SAS Hill, where you will be shown the helicopter parking and camping areas of soldiers and explained the important sites during the war. You will have an overview of the 4 km circle of the Nui Dat base perimeter. Next, we will visit the rubber forest and pass Mong Ngua Mountain – which was used to be the shelter of Vietnamese soldiers.

We were a group of 3 with an interest in Australian military history who had high expectation for this tour to the Long Tan memorial. Our guide Colbie did a great job guiding us around this iconic battlefield, including walking us through VC tunnels, pointing out landmarks & providing lots of information about what happened on the day. She was able to give perspectives from both sides of the war which was interesting & thought provoking. She helped make the day very special.

Today, Colbie took my family and I to the Long Tan and Nui Day battlefields. On the way, we stopped at a local market where Colbie showed us around the different stalls. Whilst there we bought some delicious lady finger bananas and also some flowers to lay a floral tribute at the 2 memorial areas. Colbie was so friendly and extremely knowledgeable, explaining to us what the war meant to Vietnam. We also explored the local tunnel system, which was fantastic and a real eye opener! On the way home we stopped for a delicious lunch at a beautiful local restaurant. Highly recommend this tour for anyone with links or interest to the Battle of Long Tan and the Vietnam war

Our tour was an incredibly moving experience. Our tour guide, Vinh, was very knowledgeable and shared a lot with us. The most touching part of the trip was the ceremony that Vinh prepared at the Long Tan memorial. Vinh was exceptionally respectful and the ceremony was an emotional experience that gave us the opportunity to remember both Australian and Vietnamese lives who were lost during the war. A truly unforgettable experience.

You need to bring a little bit of imagination and ideally some background knowledge to bring this one to life. However our tour guide, HillBilly Jack (yes), was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic he would have kept anyone interested. He brought laminated photographs of the areas from 2966 so it was easy to compare and contrast the sites as they are today. A really poignant few moments were taken at the cross, as well as a chance to lay a flower which was a really nice touch from the guide.

If you’re heading out to Long Tan and Nui Dat, go with Hill Billy Jack. I was the only one on the tour, which made it even better, it felt personal and gave the day more weight. Jack’s more than a guide, he’s a genuine custodian of the history. He doesn’t just tell you what happened, he adds context from both sides. Nothing feels scripted or overdone. It’s honest, grounded, and respectful. If you want a real experience out there, Jack’s your guy.

A profound and educational experience. Thought I knew a fair bit about the battle and the circumstances leading up to, during and after it, but actually standing in the area imagining the sights and sounds was at times overwhelming. Our guide, HillBilly Jack (yes) was extremely knowledgeable and used entertaining information about the history of Vietnam, the lead up to the start of the Vietnam War and the build up around the battle to life. Do yourself a favour and quietly imagine and ponder when you get to the memorial cross. A+++
