What To Expect

From Nam Ou Bridge, 30 km north of Luang Prabang, morning half day cycle approximately 14 kilometers along the Nam Ou and Mekong rivers to Manifa Elephant Camp. Ride through the beautiful Luang Prabang countryside on our new, well-maintained mountain bike Trek Marlin7. The route is both unpaved and paved, and except for some ups and downs of about 50 meters along the way, it is flat, and is safe as it is mostly used only by locals and has little car traffic. Along the way we stop at villages and rice fields, and at Pak Ou we board a boat and visit a famous cave. A buffet lunch will be served upon arrival Ban Xang Hai village. You can also take a shower and change clothes. Afternoon options vary depending on selection. (1) Morning only tour. End at 2 pm (2) 2 hours kayaking to Pak Ou Caves. followed by a boat trip back to Luang Prabang (this option does not visit the caves in the morning) End at 6 pm (3) Kuang Si Waterfalls. End at 6 pm (4) Tad Sae Waterfalls (Only from the end of July to the beginning of January) End at 6 pm

It was a very organised trip that helped us understand the Laos culture and landscape. An earlier pick up (08:10) than the advertised )08:20 -08:45) which caught us off guard when we received a chaser call. Our guide (Gok) was a real inspiration who was very knowledgeable, positive and interesting keen to answer any questions we may have. We were particularly moved by the cycle through UXO mine exploration and the knowledge of the “secret war” which prompted us to visit the centre on our return, “Gok” arranged our drop off. A fantastic trip which ended with a buffet lunch overlooking the Mekong. Brilliant!

  • Kayaking Great. Avoid Mountain Biking.

I have struggled with this review for days. The things that were good were very, very good. The things that were bad were horrid. First the good: Our guide, Vong, was excellent. He was knowledgeable, experienced, and took very good care of us. He made sure, at every turn, we were safe, and enjoying the tour. He shared his experience, and immense knowledge, of having been a monk. That meant a lot to us. The set up for this company is a full service compound including a buffet area where a variety of tours leave from. As hokey as it sounds, it works. Now, the bad: we did the “mountain biking” trip. The bikes they provided were good, solid, mountain bikes. We were hopeful. The first half of the trip was spent riding on a shoulderless two lane paved highway. There were semis, dump trucks, and heavy traffic passing us within arm’s distance. It was terrifying. One wrong move by anyone would have been catastrophic. At one point I stopped riding and asked for the tour van to come get me. Vong, and he was right, said we would be turning off onto the “trail” in 8 minutes. I wondered, out loud, how many semis were in 8 minutes. We turned off onto a dirt/gravel road which was the trail. It too was a back road that eventually lead to another paved road. The tour description for the “mountain biking” talked about a trail ride along two rivers. That did not happen. We overheard a discussion later that said it used to go along the rivers, but they changed it. Our kayaking was great. Avoid the “mountain biking.”
