This is a unique opportunity to learn about and make your own makgeolli! This is the only English-speaking makgeolli making class in Busan. The class is perfect for anyone interested in Korean food and alcohol, history and culture, and fermentation. No previous brewing experience is required – we provide you with everything you need to make your own makgeolli!

The host is a professional brewer who worked in food and beverage in the US and studied traditional alcohol under Korean master brewers. At our makgeolli studio close to Gwangalli Beach, we will introduce different types of Korean alcohol as well as what makes them different from other rice-based alcohols. We also provide a tasting of various types so you can try them for yourself! We will then make makgeolli, from the processing of rice to incorporating enzymes unique to Korean alcohol.

What To Expect

This activity is a unique opportunity to not only learn about Korean traditional alcohol but also to brew your own makgeolli! We will provide all the ingredients and instructions. You will make makgeolli during the class and take home a container to continue brewing at home. After one week you will have your own craft makgeolli to enjoy at home with friends and family (if you are traveling we will give you a bottle of pre-made makgeolli)! The class will also include an overview about Korean traditional alcohol and how they are made (makgeolli, takju, yakju, soju), as well as a tasting of different Korean alcohols. This class is a unique experience to learn more about and taste Korean alcohols as well as the process of making makgeolli from a native English speaking professional brewer who learned under Korean master brewers! After the class you should have more knowledge of the rich history and culture of Korean alcohol, the variety of flavors beyond what you can find in the convenience stores, and the ability to continue your makgeolli brewing journey long after the class!

You learn about making the makgeolli and can take it home with you! It was a lovely experience, we even had a try of different types of makgeolli while waiting on the rice.

Recommended if you like makgeolli. He is a very kind teacher. You have to go up the stairs to the fourth floor, so be careful if you are unsure of your feet or have a lot of luggage. Very little water and can be taken home by plane. If you are unable to do so, please consult with Kit only available for purchase

  • Drinking and learning about makgeolli -- what's not to like!

Michelle's makgeolli class was a lot of fun! Not only do you get to make your own batch of makgeolli, you'll also learn about the culture/history/lore of it and try a lot of different kinds (and not the mass-produced stuff, the good stuff!) Best of all, she offers kits to make makgeolli at home, so we'll be able to recreate our memories of Korea back in the US. Michelle is a great guide for Busan as well, and gave us recommendations for restaurants and the rest of our trip. If you can, plan to do this early in your trip, the makgeolli you prepare in class will be ready to drink a few days later.

  • Tasty Makgeoli and Fun Experience:))

My husband and I attended this workshop for the first time while visiting Busan, and we were curious about it. Michelle is fluent in English, so I didn't need to translate for my husband, who doesn't speak Korean, which made the experience very efficient and enjoyable. Michelle let us taste various traditional makgeolli, and for someone like me who had only tried store-bought makgeolli in the U.S., it was a more wholesome experience with a wide range of flavors that satisfied all my senses. They were so tasty! Besides the taste, learning something new with my spouse is always enjoyable. The fact that makgeolli requires a few more days of loving care even after the workshop helped us appreciate the traditional way of makgeoli making process. Michelle was kind throughout the entire process, and we appreciated her genuineness. I recommend her makgeolli workshop when you're in Busan!

Couldn’t recommend this class more. Michelle is friendly and knowledgeable and helps you understand the makgeolli brewing process in more detail in addition to tasting a broad spectrum of makgeolli’s. Plus she even gave us a couple recommendations of other places to visit around Busan which were great! 10 out of 10!
