Deavon, aka “Manta Claus”, texted us in advance to let us know where to meet and ask if we wanted to rent GoPros and wet suits, then helped get us oriented toward the boat where we were driven by Rory a short way over to the manta ray viewing area in front of the Outrigger Kona hotel. Kalina (spelling?) helped everybody get snorkeled up and into the water, and Greg rounded up the swimmers at the viewing point then gave a very knowledgeable talk on being around manta rays. We had a very professional and positive experience overall. A few things to note: Sign the waivers that are linked to in an email that Hawaii Island and Ocean Tours sends to you days in advance so nobody has to wait on you to start the ride out. Kids are given a life vest onboard so there is no need to rent one for them. All snorklers are given a floatation device to use while swimming and viewing the manta rays. No worries if you get jitters at first, but it is such a short swim from the boat to the viewing platform and everybody is so focused on watching graceful manta rays that you will be grateful you did it. Embarkation and debarkation is at boat level while it is tied up at a concrete dock. To get off the boat to view the manta rays you slip down the side of it into the water and to get back aboard you will climb a ladder up.

We booked a Manta Ray Snorkeling tour, unfortunately one staff member significantly affected our impression. When we asked normal, reasonable questions, this particular crew member, a woman, responded with sarcasm first, then gave very brief, perfunctory answers. The tone felt dismissive and condescending rather than professional. We understand that guides may be busy or tired, but basic courtesy and respectful communication should be a standard—especially in a tour setting where guests may be nervous or unfamiliar with the activity. The manta snorkeling itself was memorable, but the staff attitude took away from what should have been an amazing experience. I hope management can address this, as better training in customer interaction would greatly improve the overall quality of the tour.

Best experience ever! Saw two manta rays within just a few minutes of floating and they come inches from your body! They are beautiful harmless creatures! Some may think it’s scary, but being this close to nature was a unique and enchanting experience of a lifetime!

So fire we saw at least 10 maybe 12-15 manta rays including big Bertha and they were less than a few inches away. Some accidentally touched us. Do it late , like 9 pm

This was the 2nd time that we have taken this tour with this company. And the trip did not disappoint. It was as good as the first time. The staff on site are very friendly and helpful and we felt safe jumping into the ocean in pitch black darkness.

I had a great experience from start to finish. They guide you step by step and give very clear instructions. We did the 6:20 and saw many Manta-rays. I was a bit anxious but we were in the best hands and the captain and two guide members were incredible. Im so glad I did it!

It is a short ride out and the swim time from the boat to the board was less & easy too. Jake, Greg & Sean (hope I remembered this name right) were amazing. My friend and I were non-swimmers, we wanted to do this snorkel tour anyways and I am happy to say they made it happen for us. They took really good care of us. Thank you guys!
