Long before Malacca was on the UNESCO list, it was once the "Great Entrepôt"—a humid, high-stakes clearing house for the world’s most coveted ingredients. Here, the monsoon winds brought the bounty of the Moluccas Spice Islands and a collision of global influences that fused to create a flavour profile you won't find anywhere else on Earth. Our feasting tour of 15+ tastings invites guests on a culinary experience led by our team of professional foodie guides. Before we get started, our tour reflects the local cuisine and the limitations of street food vendors means we unfortunately cannot cater for every dietary restriction. Here's an honest appraisal for the tour so no-one is disappointed: ✖️Unsuitable for vegetarians sorry, as there are 3-4 less tastings due to limited alternatives at some vendors. ✖️ Unsuitable for severe allergies, halal or celiac diets, due to risk of traces and cross-contamination. If you are feeling adventurous for a foodie journey, read on!
Malacca was a place where fortunes were made and empires were toppled over a handful of cloves and nutmeg. Today, that history isn't just in the museums; it’s simmering in the pots of the city's backstreet kitchens. We begin opposite the stilted timber houses of Jalan Kampung Morten, starting the culinary engine with a roti john - a local omelette sandwich born of street-side genius. Alongside is the legendary asam pedas; this sour-spicy tamarind fish stew is Malacca in a bowl: sharp and stained deep red by the chilies that arrived when the Spice Route converged with the Silk Road.

The food tour was the best of its kind I had so far! Our guide, Mimi, was so fun and kind and experienced. We learned so much about Melaka and Malaysia, the history and the different kinds of food. She knows so much and she made the experience very unique. It really is a lot of different kinds of food and everything tastes amazing. It would be a waste to miss out on this tour, it was definitely my highlight food-wise during my week in Malaysia.

This was a fabulous experience that went far beyond culinary delights of Malacca. Mimi was an exceptional tour guide- professional, with an excellent command of English, she was passionate about her home, Malacca. Proud of its multicultural heritage, its multi layered history, the diverse ethnicity of its people and its multi faith places of worship. For four hours we were immersed in an authentic journey through time and place and enjoyed punctuating the whole experience with such a diverse array of delicious taste experiences. We would not hesitate to recommend this tour to anyone with an adventurous spirit and a willingness to try something out of the ordinary

With a small group, the entire trip is pleasant and enjoyable. All the stops are pretty closed with each other, so don't worry that we have to do it on foot. We went to hidden gems and ate like the locals. Sam made sure we enjoy the food and are full at the end of tour. If you are in Melaka for a short period of time and/or especially if you are travelling solo, this food tour is the best way for you to cover all the signature Melaka food.

I know nothing about the typical foods of Malaysia so was very curious and signed up for Sam’s Food Tour. It was a great experience and I could not be happier. He was kind, well informed and fun! Sam took us to places “off the beaten path” ( I never would have d found on my own! ) and ordered amazing food: sweet, savory, unusual and delicious. The foods represented all of the cultures of Malasia: Malay, Chinese and Indian and included incredible fish from local waters. A variety of flavors with generous portions. He was especially kind to order foods not very spicy for my American palate. While we were eating Sam shared the history and the method of preparation of each food. I am a single woman traveling alone and Sam made me feel safe and comfortable. At the end he ordered a taxi for me and waited for me —ensuring my safety back to my hotel. It is hard to put a price on that. I highly recommend Sam’s food tour! You will not be disappointed.
