• Don’t trust Viator’s Refund Guarentee

  The actual experience was fine in terms of the small van and cruise to and from Milford Sound. However, we booked the highly recommended return flight tour rather than the van return. In spite of Viator’s guarantee of a “full refund due to weather” we received only the amount calculated by Altitude Tours as the “full refund.” That amount was significantly less than the difference between the Flight return tour (about 6 hrs) and the regular van only tour (over 11 hours). So not only did we not get a full refund, we missed a dinner reservation and an additional excursion. Since Milford Sound typically experiences rain 220 days per year, plan accordingly.

  What an awesome tour. If you are thinking of going to Milford Sound, this is the way to do it. We had Alana as our guide and she was phenomenal. Her mixture of humor and local/regional knowledge made the ~5 hour drive go by quickly. After seeing the sound by sea, it was also cool to see it by air. Our day was a little too breezy for a plane, but we were notified ahead of time that might be a possibility, and were given the option to upgrade for a helicopter ride instead. The helicopter ended up being the highlight of our trip!

  This was an absolutely fantastic trip. Milford Sound was the prime reason for visiting New Zealand and our guide Andy made it a perfect day. Everything we did was on time, as advertised and professionally executed.

  Shelly was an excellent driver & guide, full of fun information around every turn. She took wonderful individual group photos and shared dear personal stories about growing up in New Zealand. Our day was perfect and the included lunch was actually pretty good & filling! Weather was a lovely sunny day, and we were able to take the plane ride back to Queenstown. Would 100% recommend this experience to anyone traveling to the south island.

  We loved this tour from start to finish! It was a long day, but so worth it. Nev was our tour guide, and he was an interesting guy! He picked us up at our hotel in Queenstown and explained so much about New Zealand along the way to Milford Sound. The van was comfortable and Nev provided just the right amount of narrative. He gave us all the ins and outs so we didn’t get lost in the crowds at our stops. The boat trip through Milford Sound was just wonderful, two hours long. After the boat trip, Nev introduced us to our pilot, Mike. We were really glad that we chose to fly back to Queenstown for 2 reasons: 1.) the day was long enough without a return car ride, and 2.) the small plane provided the most spectacular views we’ve ever seen!!! We were lucky that the weather cooperated. We’d highly recommend this tour!!
