Monistrol de Montserrat
The Montserrat rack railway covers the five kilometers between Monistrol de Montserrat and Montserrat. It is a route that takes you to the top of Catalonia’s most emblematic mountain, which is visible from all angles thanks to the panoramic view offered by the train’s large windows. Its history dates back to 1891, when Joaquim Carrera, an engineer who was passionate about Montserrat and Swiss mountain trains, convinced an entrepreneur to build a train between the recently-opened Monistrol de Montserrat station and the monastery.
Montserrat
Montserrat Natural Park is a natural space dominated by the characteristic silhouette of its eponymous mountain, a rocky massif of sandstone and extremely hard calcareous cement that over millions of years has adopted its peculiar and recognisable form. The Holy Cave, the Sant Joan and Sant Miquel chapels, and above all, Montserrat Abbey, make this place, which is just a short distance from Barcelona, an unmissable destination. Montserrat is nicknamed the ‘magic mountain’ due to the numerous legends it has generated. The first of them is the discovery of the wooden statue of the Virgin Mary, which is reputed to have been found in the so-called Santa Cova or Holy Cave in 880. Another legend tells of a woodcutter who made a pact with the Devil to receive a fast horse to carry his wood.

Be aware of the this tour. Boy choir event cancellation was informed when we reached at the bus stand. Going near black Madonna was canceled too and was told to us when we went inside the church. We felt cheated because 2 of the key events were cancelled and Information was shared with us at last moment. Please book other cheap tours instead of this one. Viator should not advertise this tour on their website. When I complained to Viator about my experience their response was Sorry.

Montserrat is a breathtaking side trip about an hour from Barcelona. My tour left the city at 9 a.m. and arrived back at 4. The boys’ choir (for 15 minutes at 1 p.m.), the art museum, the basilica and the farmers’ market are well worth a visitor’s time. If the tour had come with an extra hour of free time, I could have walked the trail to St. Michael’s Cross. That was my only disappointment.

It was an easy walk and the guide was wonderful. She was very informative. Would highly recommend booking on dates that boys choir performs.

The guide was knowledgeable but I was very disappointed that we had to stand in the back of the church while listening to the boys choir. The guide wasted time outside the church explaining things while the church fill up with people. The bus also smelled of ammonia. The day was very windy and we had difficulty hearing the guide as the tour began.

This Montserrat tour was a real disappointment. Our guide was a very young woman who clearly lacked both life experience and knowledge of Spain or Montserrat. Her commentary was minimal and shallow — nothing beyond basic facts — and she made almost no effort to engage with the group. Most of the tour seemed focused on promoting Viator and the shops at Montserrat, rather than sharing the history or culture that people actually came to learn about. That’s not what a guided experience should be. The final part of the tour — hearing the famous boys’ choir — was something we’d all been looking forward to, but due to poor time management and unnecessary talking, we arrived so late that we were stuck at the very back of the cathedral and could hardly see a thing. Overall, this felt unprofessional, poorly managed, and uninspired. Please, hire guides with genuine knowledge, maturity, and passion for the history of Montserrat — not someone treating it like a script or a sales pitch.
