Enter off limits areas like the two walled cemeteries and an exclusive experience in the CATACOMBS beneath the Old Cathedral. For over 200 years, the CATACOMBS of the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral has served as the final resting place for the departed. This unique and historic place has been a silent witness to the many struggles and accomplishments of prominent New York Catholics. It is where bishops rest beside noteworthy New Yorkers who have played defining roles in Catholic, New York and American history.

5.00Visiting the New York Catacombs by Candlelight was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. The tour takes you through hidden corners of the city’s history, with dim candlelight adding a mysterious and atmospheric touch. It feels both eerie and fascinating at the same time. The guides were knowledgeable, engaging, and shared plenty of interesting stories about the catacombs and the history behind them. Safety and organization were excellent — despite the dark and narrow passages, everything felt well-managed. It’s a slower-paced tour that allows you to really soak in the atmosphere and take memorable photos. If you enjoy history, adventure, or just something a bit unusual, this is definitely worth adding to your New York itinerary.

1.00We were looking forward to this tour. Being Catholic we wanted to hear about the history. Our tour person was not appropriate to the tour. He made jokes that shouldn’t have been part of the tour. For example, as we are entering into the Catacombs, he says “ go towards the light” in an eery sounding voice. Then when down there, he came around and says “I’m the evil twin”. He made references to Frankenstein. We left the tour and attended Mass. Totally disrespectful in the space we were at.
