Explore their charming gardens, café, market, and gift shop while you are there! This is a roughly 1.5-2 hr. tour
Finca La Azotea
This is a great accessible birding option with flat and wide trails - with good chances at many specialist species like bushy-crested Jays and Band-backed Wrens. This is a roughly 2 hr. tour

El Hato / Earth Lodge Tour
Explore Earth Lodge: explore the beautiful Earth Lodge, with a delicious restaurant, stunning views, yoga, and lodging. Great option to end tour Difficulty: moderate, some steep sections but generally a smooth trail without rocks or uneven footing. 2-4 km. trails Duration: 5 hours: flexible light snack to keep us birding El Hato: explore the birds and trails of El Hato, a small town perched above Antigua that affords stunning views of the volcanoes Free Shuttle at 8am: free shuttle up to El Hato at 8am from meeting point, down at 12:30 pm. Or private car (not included) for earlier start! What birds to expect?: El Hato is a prime spot for Northern Emerald Toucanets, tanagers, warblers, and raptors. Species numbers for a day: 30-60 Starting point: Ruinas de la Iglesia de la Candelaria, H77C+896, Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala
Finca La Azotea Coffee Farm
Accessibility: flat, wide trails mean wheelchairs could have access depending on wheel type gift shop: optional chance to browse the museo de café gift shop! Difficulty: easy, flat, wide trails Duration: 2 hours: flexible tour (entry fee included in tour price) light snack to keep us birding Finca La Azotea: Perfect for a relaxed walk and exploration of the vibrant birds found in this shade-grown coffee farm close to Antigua! Birds to Expect: Look for woodpeckers and jays among the shaded coffee. Orioles and hummingbirds are common too. ~25 species/ day Starting point: Finca La Azotea, H7C3+CXX, Jocotenango, Guatemala
Cumbre de Maltiox, Pastores
Difficulty: moderate/ difficult, with some steep sections and loose footing. Best for experienced hikers. 2-5 km. trails Duration: 4 hours: flexible light snack to keep us birding Cumbre de Maltiox: Hike up this beautiful ridge looking down on the town below. Great for those seeking a tougher trail and great birds Birds to Expect: look for tanagers, becards, ground-sparrows, and raptors. High species counts, usually 40+ Starting point: Plazuela de Pastores, H6RW+R68, Pastores, Guatemala
Santa Catarina Bobadilla
Difficulty: moderate to difficult, with some steep sections and loose / uneven footing. Best for experienced hikers. 2-4 km. trail Duration: 4 hours: flexible light snack to keep us birding Santa Catarina Bobadilla: Hike up through beautiful forest and enjoy views of the volcanoes, while searching for migrating and resident birds Birds to expect: A great place for migrating warblers and resident woodpeckers and orioles. Ask for sample bird checklists! species: 30-60/day Starting point: The cumbre, Santa Catarina de Bobadilla 03001, Guatemala
Eco Farms Urban Forest Tour
Accessibility: Flat even ground and short walk means that some areas are wheelchair accessible depending on wheel type Explore Eco Farm: part of the tour can include exploring the other side of Eco Farm, with it's gardens, café, and eco school. Birds there too! Difficulty: very easy, short loop through urban forest plot Duration: 2 hours: flexible Chance to buy snacks!: Buy snacks and or a meal at Eco Farm's Buho Café or various shops Eco Farms GT: great for casual birders! This option is short 1 to 2 hour walk through the forest plot at Eco Farms GT Birds to Expect: This small forest plot is surprisingly full of birds, especially migratory ones. Finca El Pilar
Difficulty: moderate / difficult, depending on trails chosen. Some steep sections and steps. Always an option to stay on flat areas Duration: 4 hours: flexible quick snack to keep us birding Finca El Pilar: hike up to the mirador, or choose the tough route on the way up to Cerro el Cucurucho. Flexible options! entry fee included Birds to Expect: Famous for its hummingbird feeders, and its forest birds like toucanets, forest-falcons, and quail. 5.00A fantastic time birding with Marty. We had truly excellent sightings of birds, including collecting nest material and a woodpecker excavating its best hole. I’d highly recommend booking with Marty, he’s easy company and very knowledgeable.

5.00I spent a morning birdwatching with Marty in El Hato. We observed 62 species, 40 of which were new to me. His ability to identify birds by sight or sound is so impressive! Marty is very comfortable to be around and easy to talk with. He also is proactive with his communication leading up to the outing, which is helpful. Overall, a highly positive experience and I’d recommend his birdwatching outings to anyone, novice or experienced birders alike.

5.00Excellent birding tour! I chose the option to walk trails near the Earth Lodge. We saw 60 species of birds! Marty is a wealth of knowledge about bird identification and behavior and his enthusiasm is contagious. A great way to spend a morning outside of Antigua!

5.00We booked a tour at Finca El Pilar with Marty and had a fantastic time. Marty is extremely knowledgeable about the local birds and the area in general. He even took the time to teach us how to use our binoculars properly. I would definitely recommend his tours; it was a wonderful experience

5.00Martin’s bird tour was incredible and a great way to engage with the environment in Guatemala. He is very knowledgeable about birds, spotting them from so far away & identifying them by sound. He had an extra pair of binoculars that helped me see so many birds in vivid detail. He also took photos and at the end of the tour, sent me a list of birds and photos that we saw on the tour. He has a very disarming and friendly personality, and the tour flew by!

5.00We just arrived in Antigua this afternoon and it started off with really warm welcome! We saw so many unique birds! Marty’s excitement knowledge and enthusiasm are contagious! We hiked up a trail through the forest and along some farms learning about birds their habitat and the area! We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend this tour! Thank you so much!

5.00Marty is awesome!! His ability to identify birds is super impressive and you won’t regret booking a tour with him. We spent about 3ish hours birding and I learned a lot about Antigua & the birds of Guatemala with him. He shared a lot of knowledge about the local environment, very clearly respects the land & town, very personable, etc. Definitely one of my favorite experiences in Antigua. I was also very impressed with his ability to promptly make the bird list after we finished & send it over with pictures right away.

5.00Our family had a wonderful time with Marty as our guide in el Hato. He is super knowledgable, and led us on a trek to a place we never would have found on our own. We ended up with a huge list of birds in our morning outing, including many lifers, while also learning a ton about the local area and natural environment. He was excellent with our 3.5 year old son, who was rather impatient at times, to make sure we really maximized the trip and had a lot of fun at the same time. He kept an e-bird list for us and shared it right away, along with capturing tons of great photos of the birds we saw as well. Highly recommend you reach out to him if you want a really personable, fun, and productive birding outing while around Antigua!
