Step into the oldest city in the Netherlands and rediscover its Roman past as Noviomagus. In this self-guided walking quest, your guide is Quintus Tullius Crispus, a young soldier of the Tenth Legion who sweeps floors, polishes shields, and dreams of retiring to a quiet farm. Follow him on your phone through Nijmegen, solving riddles, decoding Latin, and uncovering 2,000-year-old stories at your own pace.
Across 11 stops and roughly 1.7 km, you will meet Emperor Trajan, decode the meaning of Noviomagus, count Roman columns reused in the Barbarossa Ruin, hunt for legion stamps in the walls of Sint-Nicolaaskapel, peer through glass at original Roman masonry and underfloor heating, and stand above the grave of the Lead Lady, an everyday woman buried here around 200 AD.
Start anytime and finish in about 85 minutes. Great for solo travellers, couples, families, and small groups. Wear comfy shoes and bring water. Best in daylight; avoid when the river is high.

Tucked away in the heart of Nijmegen, the Godenpijler (Pillar of the Gods) is a striking replica of a Roman altar stone, rich with symbols and mystery. A really fun quest through Nijmegen! Even though I already knew some of the city’s history, I still learned new things about the Romans in Noviomagus. The story made the locations feel more alive and I liked how history and puzzles were combined. The route was easy to follow and took me to places I normally would have walked past without noticing. Definitely recommended if you enjoy history and exploring a city in a different way.
