Nikko Tosho-gu
Understand why “Don’t say ‘magnificent’ until you’ve seen Nikko” visiting the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate and nearby shrines and temple. The most renowned shrine of “the Shrines and Temples of Nikko”-a Japan’s leading world heritage, is where Ieyasu Tokugawa, the great Shogun who started the flourishing Edo Period, is enshrined. Most of the shrine complex you see today was rebuilt in 17th century. The shrine contains 55 buildings including 8 national treasures and 34 listed buildings. The highlights are sumptuous carvings lacquered and richly coloured brilliantly, which you will gaze at craftsmanship assembled from all over the country. Do not miss the symbol of peace “Sleeping Cat”, and the “Three Monkeys” with the “see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil” poses!
Kegon Falls
Kegon Waterfall is the most famous of Nikko’s 48 waterfalls. Water from Lake Chuzenji falls 97 metres straight down to the rocks below creating a dynamic and artistic work of nature. A special lift takes visitors to the basin where the force and roar of the water can be witnessed close up! Impressive in any season, the waterfall looks particularly spectacular when surrounded by the fresh green leaves in May, house martins in June, or the “12 falls” - small streams of the frozen waterfall clad in blue ice - during January and February.

We have enjoyed a full day tour with Yuki Tsunoda as our guide. In the first place she was on time, organized and delightful in her English! She provided an eclectic experience with history, culture, modern points and the biological and natural environment!! She provided a friendly environment for us to ask our detailed and occasionally esoteric questions with thoughtful answers. If you are wise, you should ask for her.

Great day despite the rain. Our Taka Guide was able to meet the challenge of all the places we wanted to visit:-). Sports day, strong pace but we were warned because we wanted to make the most of this day. A big thank you to our guide who knew how to enlighten us and explain us full of anecdotes from the period of the shoguns and small details that we miss if we do not tell them. We really had a great day visiting.

Lovely day walking tour in UNESCO heritage areas of Nikko with our kind guide Taka. He drew up a customised itinerary for us based on our likes, and was very flexible through the day since we had a toddler with us. He also brought out a lot of interesting stories about the history of each monument. A very good way to tour the sites in Nikko.

We had a very successful and enjoyable trip with your knowledgeable guide Taka. We had decided on a full day guided tour of Nikko. We were allowed to choose the 3-4 sights that we most wanted to be guided through. Taka met us at the station, helped us with tickets and finding our way to the hotel. And then he took us on a very educational and exciting tour through Toshogo Shrine, Rinnoji, Temozawa Imperial Villa and Futarasan Shrine. We also passed by Shinkyo Bridge. Taka conveyed his knowledge of Japanese history, culture, craftsmanship and religion in very good English, and it was a real pleasure to be guided by this very nice man. We would highly recommend Taka for your trip to Nikko

Our first trip to Japan and our 2nd day on the ground, we had a private tour of Nikko shrines and temple, as well as the bridge. Our guide Takafumi Nishikawa was so good! Super helpful with advice on how to make the trip from Shinjuku as easy as possible, very clear about where to meet and how to recognise him as well. Taka organised the day to account for our preferences and pace, and arranged for a delicious authentic Japanese ‘yuba’ style lunch. Taka was a prompt communicator via email and so knowledgeable about the Nikko area. We had a great day! Highly recommend.
