Nikko Tosho-gu
Understand why “Don’t say ‘magnificent’ until you’ve seen Nikko” visiting the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate and nearby shrines and temple. The most renowned shrine of “the Shrines and Temples of Nikko”-a Japan’s leading world heritage, is where Ieyasu Tokugawa, the great Shogun who started the flourishing Edo Period, is enshrined. Most of the shrine complex you see today was rebuilt in 17th century. The shrine contains 55 buildings including 8 national treasures and 34 listed buildings. The highlights are sumptuous carvings lacquered and richly coloured brilliantly, which you will gaze at craftsmanship assembled from all over the country. Do not miss the symbol of peace “Sleeping Cat”, and the “Three Monkeys” with the “see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil” poses!
Kegon Falls
Kegon Waterfall is the most famous of Nikko’s 48 waterfalls. Water from Lake Chuzenji falls 97 metres straight down to the rocks below creating a dynamic and artistic work of nature. A special lift takes visitors to the basin where the force and roar of the water can be witnessed close up! Impressive in any season, the waterfall looks particularly spectacular when surrounded by the fresh green leaves in May, house martins in June, or the “12 falls” - small streams of the frozen waterfall clad in blue ice - during January and February.

My daughter and I had a wonderful tour of Nikko with Yuki! She did an amazing job of sharing ideas for where to go ahead of the tour, including helping to book a taxi with a car seat for my 15 month old daughter, so we knew ahead of time exactly where we would be going! Travelling with a small baby can be tough and a little bit slower at times, but Yuki was flexible on timing and really helped a lot to ensure that my daughter also had an amazing time on the tour! I would highly recommend it.

Lovely experience. Our guide was so sweet and helpful. Nikko itself was absolutely beautiful. It was snowing there, which made it even more incredible. If you have an extra day, I would highly recommend doing this, as it also provides a great contrast with the hectic city.

What an absolutely lovely experience! The tour guide was on top of communicating with us weeks before our tour to ensure the itinerary he builds fits what we wanted to see. During the tour he was attentive and showed us so much! I would absolutely book another tour!

We had a fun and memorable day in Nikko with Taka as our tour guide. He is such a nice person and was very knowledgeable about all the historic sites he took us to see. Before the trip, he sent me a list of options of top sites and helped put together an itinerary that would interest us, including a delicious and traditional lunch. We really enjoyed our time spent with Taka and would highly recommend his tour to anyone traveling to Nikko.

Ichi provided us with a memorable and personable tour through Nikko. We thoroughly enjoyed his sweet and insightful nature, and all of the specific details surrounding Japanese history and culture that he shared with us. By the end of the tour, we wanted to adopt him into the rest of our travels. We adored this tour, and it was made that much better by Ichi. Thank you so much for everything!

Our group of six friends was guided through Nikko by Takafumi Nishikawa. He took initiative to ask for our specific interests and limitations long before the tour and responded promptly, giving us good options and suggestions. On the day, he was timely in meeting us and very well prepared - he had marked-up individual maps of the area we’d tour and used this to give us a good overview and plan for the day. He was effective in changing the itinerary on the fly to even better align with our specific interests…. and ensure we wouldn’t miss our train! His knowledge was extensive and shared in an engaging way: this is no small task given crowding at the sites! He arranged lunch at an excellent restaurant after our tour. He is meticulous, personable and thoroughly committed to providing the best possible experience for clients. I highly recommend Taka. The only improvement I could suggest is using a microphone linked to clients’ earphones to ensure that all can hear him at all times. This only reflects on the tour’s resources and is no criticism of Taka’s exceptional skills and abilities. Thanks for a memorable day in Nikko!
