When the sky is clear and solar activity is high, there is a great chance of seeing the lights and people don’t care about the type of the vehicle or tour guides, but if these conditions are not in place, other factors come into play, and one wishes a better vehicle and better guides. In our case the sky was overcast and solar activity not great (between KP 1 and 2). Perhaps, the tour company should have cancelled the tour, but at a loss, you know… Here is what went wrong. Vehicle. It was a bad idea to travel in a big bus. Our bus arrived late at what seems the most popular viewing point, the parking space was packed, and we were able to park only due to other drivers’ courtesy. When we moved to another, equally popular, but narrower point, we found ourselves in a precarious situation: no parking place and no space for a maneuver to turn the bus back. The driver - the only positive point of this trip, calm and skillful - managed to reverse the bus crawling at a dangerously short distance from the slope leading to the water. We did not disembark at this point or any further viewing points. Guides. The guides provided a minimal information at the beginning of the trip. They assured us that they would be constantly monitoring the situation (weather), but it was not the case. Instead they were engaged in a private and very loud chat with each other. We leaned a lot about the countries where one of them lived prior to coming to Norway, his ex-girlfriend, her grandparents, her dog, his in-laws in his country of origin, his political views of the mayor of Tromso and his brother, etc. Frankly, it was inappropriate and unpleasant. We could not even sleep, because the conversation was so loud. We had an experience with two other tours (not the same company, fortunately), and in both cases the guides were excellent: they provided interesting information wisely portioned at regular intervals throughout the trip and actively engaged with the groups. We believe that bad weather and low solar activity could and should be compensated by the guides, educating us about Norway, its traditions (not about their ex’s), telling stories, jokes etc. Both guides were foreigners. Maybe they did not love Norway or did not know much about it? They did not update us on the changing conditions either and did not show any creativity in choosing alternative locations. Overall. We do understand that the northern lights are unpredictable. What we are unhappy about is not the lack of spectacular lights, but the lack of effort and engagement on the guides’ part. The extra star goes to the driver, otherwise the rating would be only 1. Recommendation for the company: 1. Sometimes it is ok to cancel the trip. We came across one company that did. Alternatively, if the weather is bad, explain to the tourists the adverse conditions and risks, and reimburse if they decide not to go. 2. Establish a communication system with other companies to obtain the information about availability of parking at standard viewing points. 3. Pay attention to the choice of guides, perform quality control, retrain or replace those who underperform. 4. Provide the guides with the list of alternative locations. Recommendations for fellow travelers. 1. In general, if financially feasible, go with minivans. They are more mobile (some go as far as Finland to really CHASE the lights, not only visit standard overcrowded locations) and they have less problems with parking. We saw a small group at our stop, they were sitting around a campfire, which created a cordial and convivial atmosphere even in bad weather. 2. Consider avoiding this company; there are plenty others.

Incredible experience, they have the tools to find where to see the auroras. We made two stops where we saw a lot of aurora activity and we could take some amazing photos with your camera. It is 2 hours by bus more or less depends on where they decide to go but the journey becomes very enjoyable, the guides explain how the auroras and other interesting stories are formed during the journey so that the mood stays up. There is hot chocolate and tea included, the bus is comfortable. I recommend you take this company that in addition to English have this special one that we took in Spanish to understand well everything they explain. It was wonderful.
