An out of the ordinary Northern Lights tour!
Are you fit and confident in walking on ice and snow and want to reach the most scenic spots in a small, dynamic group?
Using a 4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser, we will reach the best areas with suitable skies to chase the Aurora Borealis.
If the weather conditions allow, we may set off on a light hike/snowshoe walk, reaching pristine landscapes, calm fjords, frozen lakes and the best spots that the Arctic has to offer away from the crowds.
Whether the ground will be covered in ice or snow, you will be provided with ice crampons or snow rackets, walking poles, thermal suits as well as foot and hand warmers. Remember to wear your own warm snow boots!
Your guide will take photos of you and the lights, but if you have a camera as well, bring it along! You'll get tips on how to take your own Aurora photographs and use a professional tripod.
A soup for dinner, cookies and hot drinks will warm us up in the wild, while enjoying the night Arctic sky!

Awesome adventure with Nico!! It felt like a national geographic documentary expedition - and that is exactly what I was looking for. Nico is friendly, thoughtful and knowledgable. We drove all the way from Tromso to Finland in search of the northern lights. The landscapes were stunning. We found a beautiful spot on a frozen lake in between Finland and Sweden. The photographs he took of me were epic! Thanks again Nico for the awesome trip!

This was our second tour with Nico. My family has been touring with him for many years, every time they are in Tromso. Nico is an extremely experienced guide who knows his way around perfectly. We can highly recommend the tours with him. The group is small, and the car is a real adventure vehicle that can reach even remote locations. We had a great tour and saw wonderful lights. We can highly recommend Arctic Photo Guide!

Amazing experience with Nico!!. When you go in your large SUV (maximum 6 people, it allows you to reach places inaccessible for larger vehicles, be they mini Vans, or, of course, buses. Great knowledge of the terrain and expert guide with solar applications that allow you to know almost exactly what will happen in the next half hour. Photographer Incredible in search of perfection. Exclusive deal. We did many tours in Tromso. Without a doubt, Nico from Artic Photo Guide was the best of all. Wishing we could repeat the experience soon.

I joined a Northern Lights expedition with Nico on December 17, and it was, quite simply, the highlight of my aurora chases in Tromsø. Nico runs an intimate six-person tour in a 4×4, often taking guests off the beaten track. The small group size allows for far greater flexibility. We could stop almost anywhere auroral activity appeared, and we did exactly that: after midnight on our way back to Tromsø, Nico pulled over spontaneously next to a frozen lake, and we were rewarded with the most magnificent display of northern lights of my entire trip. As a seasoned photographer with a deep passion for nature and the aurora, Nico provides everything you would expect from a high-quality small tour: thermal suits, hot soup and drinks, tripods, and professional photos of guests under the northern lights. On paper, that might sound fairly standard for photographer-led tours. What truly sets Nico apart, however, is his genuine warmth and sociability. He is deeply engaging, makes a real effort to get to know each guest, and goes the extra mile to ensure everyone feels included. He patiently teaches you how to adjust your camera settings for aurora photography — never rushed, never condescending, always encouraging. If you want to understand how to capture the lights rather than just press the shutter, you’re in excellent hands. An important note: Nico runs a one-man company. That means you are guaranteed to have him as your guide — no surprises, no last-minute substitutions. It also means cancellations hit harder than they would for large operators, so please be considerate and don’t cancel on him. Of my three northern lights chases, I was lucky enough to experience the most brilliant display on the night I went out with my favorite guide in Tromsø. I would wholeheartedly recommend Nico at Arctic Photo Guide as a first choice for anyone considering a Northern Lights tour in Tromsø, especially for those who want to learn how to photograph the aurora.

We just completed our second tour with Nico. This time with our two kids. Nico’s knowledge and passion for the Aurora and ensuring you have the best experience possible is incredible. With the temperature at -22C for our tour, Nico was constantly making sure we were all comfortable and not getting too cold. Being a small tour group, the whole experience felt intimate and catered to our families specific needs, including Nico capturing some incredible photos for us. We loved how Nico even took the time to show us how to set our cameras to get the best photos ourselves. We would 100% recommend Nico at Arctic Photo Guide to anyone considering a Northern Lights Tour (or any guided tour) in Tromso.

As a family with 2 smaller children, we consciously decided to go on a private tour with Nico - and never regretted a second! Nico gave us an all-round perfect experience and we couldn't be happier to have found such a great tour guide! Great recommendation :-)

My wife and I booked a private tour with Nico so that we could bring our young son (too young for the bus tours). My wife ended up getting sick, so it was just me and Nico. Given it was just the two of us, Nico asked how I felt about some trekking while looking for the Northern Lights. We snowshoed to a remote lake under a full moon. It was a fantastic experience. His off-road vehicle makes things easy if needed, and Nico runs everything in a first-class way. The lights weren’t at their strongest on our night, but Nico made sure to get us in the best spot for them. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience. Thanks Nico!

Beautiful experience, we stayed with Nico on December 17 and it was a breathtaking experience! The guide was very kind in providing us with everything we could need, took us to more places to be able to catch the perfect aurora and I must say that, with a lot of luck, we succeeded! Beware of tour operators with buses as they are too dispersive, they will often limit themselves to bringing you to the first “glow”. I leave attached some photos taken with a very humble mobile phone.
