Gregory Lake

Gregory Lake was created in 1873 by the British era Governor at the time, Sir William Gregory, supposedly for the purpose of providing electricity. However, the lake was mainly used for leisure and recreation after it was built. At its peak of fame, Gregory Lake was the most prominent attraction in the area and was used as a place to relax by many visitors. Now visitors can follow the ancient British era tradition of relaxing picnics on the shore of the lake, or more modern leisure activities such as rides in swan-shaped paddle boats, normal boat rides, pony rides along the shore, water walking balls, watersports such as jet skis, windsurfing and etc. As such with these many attractions Gregory Lake is a family-friendly historic location of SriLanka, attracting many holidaymakers who visit the country.

This is probably the worse tour I have booked via viator. The train ride which was the main highlight of the tour did not happen as there were a strike going on with the Sri Lankan train companies. Our disappointment continues when our supposedly guide show up with absolutely no idea what was going-on, he doesn't even know what was the itinerary supposed to be. throughout the journey, he speaks very little and at some point, he even took his own mobile phone to take pictures of the sites. The itinerary was also altered without our prior knowledge, we were not taken to Ramdoda Falls and the Vintage Post Office as indicated. When we reached Lake Gregory, the guide wanted to collect the entrance fees from us and we had to show him the hard copy booking papers which stated that it was included in the tour. All in all, this was definitely not up to expectation and I will recommended all to try other tour operators instead.

The driver turned up late. We had to call him to find out where he was. Then they had not booked the train tickets in the first class carriage. Then he stuff around for another half hour before we worked out with him to go the reverse of the itinerary and do the car trip first and then the train from Nuwara Eliya. We did the tea houses on the way up. On the return we were supposed to get on the first class carriage. It took a lots of stress waiting around the station before we had a seat confirmed. We finally got our seats, but had to meet the drive one station before Kandy. Not a good trip for a nice part of the word.

Great day trip although it was raining heavily almost all day ... excellent effort on the part of the guide as the morning train was cancelled ... he got us tickets for a similar afternoon return trip instead ... the train travelling over the plantations and gorges is spectacular.
