  • Beautiful Tribes, But Extremely Unprofessional Tour Operator

    andreamR9205VF,Dec 7, 2025

    - Review from Tripadvisor

I traveled to Ethiopia from November 2–8 for an Omo Valley tour that was arranged with Kalli. I was extremely excited for this trip and had been planning and saving for over a year to experience the Omo Valley tribes. Unfortunately, the company we booked with — and our experience with Kalli — turned what should have been a wonderful adventure into several days of unnecessary stress. We booked this tour for $1,500 per person, and on July 30, 2024, we paid our deposit. On May 21, 2025, Kalli asked us to send more money so he could purchase our internal flight tickets, which we did. Then on September 30, 2025, he suddenly informed us that we had to buy those tickets ourselves because he had already spent the money for a “family emergency” — something he never mentioned during months of communication. When we arrived in Ethiopia, Kalli did not meet us as originally planned. He claimed he had malaria at the last minute and sent someone else in his place. During our first tribal visit, that guide told us that Kalli instructed him to collect the remaining balance, which we paid in cash — exactly as budgeted. When we arrived at our hotel that evening, Kalli called my friend and told her that we still owed over $900. This was never discussed prior to the trip. I spoke to Kalli and told him that changing the price after our arrival was unacceptable and unprofessional. If the price was wrong, we should have been informed months ahead of time — not once we arrived in the country. We had budgeted responsibly, saved our cash in advance, and had other tours planned after Ethiopia. His response was: “I’m human and I make mistakes.” Although he claimed to be hospitalized with malaria, he had plenty of energy to repeatedly call and harass my friend about money that he believed we still owed. My friend spent the next two days going back and forth with him on the phone, trying to get an explanation. Then suddenly, the amount changed again, and he said we only owed $130. As we continued the tour, another concerning issue came up with the transportation. Inside the vehicle, we noticed both large and small roaches crawling around. I asked my friend — who had done a similar tour in Ethiopia the year before — if this was something she experienced previously, and she said absolutely not. The guide tried to remove and spray them several times, but they continued to appear throughout the trip, which was uncomfortable and unsanitary. We never saw roaches in any of the hotels we stayed in — only inside the vehicle. The guide explained that it was a rented vehicle, but regardless of the reason, the condition of the car was unacceptable. After we left Ethiopia and continued our travels to Zanzibar, I discovered $500 missing from my bag — money I had saved specifically for my next tour. Considering the financial pressure placed on us during the Omo Valley portion, I strongly believe it was taken during that time. Kalli later said he felt bad and offered to reimburse me but then changed his story and said sending money to the U.S. was “impossible” and refused, offering only a future credit instead. If he could not reimburse me, he should never have made that promise. The tribe visits themselves were amazing — beautiful people, culture, and unforgettable memories. However, there were last-minute itinerary changes as well, including being told the night before that one drive would take nine hours, which required rearranging our plans. Overall, while the Omo Valley tribes were incredible, the stress, dishonesty, and lack of professionalism completely overshadowed the experience. There are many reputable and honest tour operators in Ethiopia, so please research carefully to ensure you can enjoy this amazing region without the issues we faced. I truly hope this company improves communication and professionalism for future travelers.

  • Omo Valley with Kali is Omazing

The Omo Valley tribes cultural immersion with Kali is absolutely fantastic and you will the maximum experience. When I saw Kali in March some other tourists had guides which didn’t get them to the bull-jumping on time so they missed it and were not able to see the Mursi tribe (the ones with the lip plates). This is not the case with Kali and you will see everything! Kali will also tailor the experience to your needs and desires.
