This was a fantastic tour! Mimi introduced me to several great spots I would have otherwise never heard of. Trust me when I say this is one is a must if you're in Osaka!

The meeting area described in the tour is no longer in existence!! This tour has a lot of drinking with minimal food. Our guide was eating and drinking with us. On our night food tour in Kyoto, the guide said that company policy was no eating or drinking with the tour participants. Don’t know why the policy is different in Kyoto and Osaka with our tours being only two days apart

We signed up for the Osaka Backstreet Nightlife & Street Food Walking Tour on Viator during our stay in Osaka and overall had a good experience — especially thanks to our guide, Mimmi, who was enthusiastic, friendly, and a fantastic communicator throughout the evening. However, I have to give this specific tour three stars for the following reasons though. The tour description mentioned stops including Uranamba Torame Yokocho, Hozen-Ji Temple, Dotonbori, a photo stop at the Glico Sign, and passing through Shinsaibashi, along with food and four drinks. During our experience, we visited two restaurants, a sake bar, and a whisky bar. We did receive the food and drinks as described, but several of the sightseeing stops — including Hozen-Ji Temple, Dotonbori, and the Glico Sign photo stop — were not included in the actual tour route. When we arrived at the meeting location, there was already a fairly large gathering of people there. Mimmi asked if we were part of the tour, we said yes, and we split off into one of two groups with separate guides. There wasn’t really a formal check-in process, so for part of the evening we honestly wondered if we somehow ended up on the wrong version of the tour. After later researching reviews mentioning Mimmi by name, we’re fairly certain we were on the correct tour — it just didn’t fully match the itinerary described online. Our group ended up being nine people total including Mimmi — our party of two, another solo traveler, another couple, and a family of three. At some of the smaller restaurants with traditional Japanese tables, seating was definitely a bit cramped, though that’s also part of the authentic Osaka backstreet dining experience. The first restaurant focused heavily on skewers — chicken, garlic, vegetables, ginger, and other grilled items. The food was good and plentiful. The included recommended drink was a lemon-style alcoholic seltzer/chuhai. If you prefer something stronger or more beer-forward, you may want to order a beer instead. After a short rainy walk through the streets (umbrellas are definitely essential during early-to-mid rainy season in Osaka!), we stopped at a second restaurant specializing in okonomiyaki — the famous savory Japanese pancake — along with edamame, grilled skirt steak, and cheesy vegetables. Everything was tasty, and by this point we were absolutely stuffed. At that stage, we assumed we’d continue on toward Dotonbori and the Glico Sign area, but instead the tour transitioned into a sake bar stop followed by a final Japanese whisky bar. Both were enjoyable, and Mimmi remained warm and engaging throughout the evening, but we were admittedly disappointed that the iconic Dotonbori portion of the advertised tour never happened. After the final bar stop — roughly 3.5 hours into the experience — the tour ended, and we asked Mimmi for directions to Dotonbori so we could walk there ourselves. Thankfully it was only about a 10-minute walk away, and we were still able to see the famous Glico Sign on our own afterward. Overall, this tour delivered on the food, drinks, and friendly atmosphere, and Mimmi herself was wonderful. However, if the sightseeing elements like Dotonbori, the Glico Sign, and Hozen-Ji Temple are major reasons you’re booking this experience, I would recommend planning to explore those areas independently before or after the tour in case they are not included in your group’s route. Also worth noting: because this is a larger group experience with fellow travelers, much of the evening naturally becomes socializing with the other guests while eating and drinking. If you’re looking for a highly personalized or intimate guided experience, this may not be the best fit. But if you enjoy meeting other travelers while experiencing Osaka’s food and nightlife scene with a fun guide, there’s still a lot to enjoy here.

Jesse took us to some great places and explained a lot about the culture and nightlife. We really enjoyed the tour and the food he ordered for us. We visited places that we would never go into on our own and that made the tour great!

This tour was extremely fun and exceeded my expectations! Our guide, Kevin, was extremely knowledgeable about the area and full of great stories. We visited multiple different restaurants and bars that we would never have found on our own. The food and drinks were great. Our only regret is that we didn't book the tour earlier in our stay in Osaka, as we didn't have time to check out the many recommendations Kevin gave us! Absolutely would recommend this to a friend!

Absolutely incredible tour. Learned so much and went to SO many places. Was an incredible experience. I can’t imagine not having done this tour - it set us up so well to know the good spots in Osaka and how to find more hidden gems. Even days after the tour we were discovering incredible food because of what we learned here.
