What To Expect
Ouchijuku
Ouchi-juku opened along the Aizu Nishi Kaido route around 1643. It flourished as a base for routes going from Aizu domain to Nikko Kaido and Edo (Tokyo). The most convenient way to reach Ouchi-juku is to use a rental car from Aizuwakamtasu City. Head south on National Route 121 and take the Prefectural Road 329 going along the mountain stream.
Ouchijuku Machinami Museum
The “Ouchi-juku Machinami Tenjikan,” which renovated the honjin (inn for government officials) from the inn town period and displaying historical materials. When you enter the building, there is a lit hearth on the floor with smoke floating into the ceiling, and many precious daily goods used during the Edo period are on display. It is a popular facility since you can experience the livelihood of the Edo period. It’s the perfect place to learn about the old way of living in Japan.

5.00We had a lovely day with our guide Nobuko. She shared lots of interesting stories about the life in old Japan and explained everything to us. She also had many trivia to keep us engaged and answered all our questions. We went to Ouchi-juku first and had lunch there (the local buckwheat noodles). Because we chose to do it all by taxi instead of public transportation we had some extra time so we visited Tsuruga Castle and the Samurai House in Aizuwakamatsu. Finally she left us at Sazaedo Temple.

5.00This tour was amazing thanks to Yoko!! We had a lot of fun traveling to Ochijuku with her by train starting in Aizu, talking about the area and history of Fukushima on the way and discovering the small town's shops and homes in the end. Highly recommend, we will come back to do other tours with her :)
