Hidden in the heart of the city centre of Amsterdam is a small wonder: Our Lord in the Attic Museum. Visitors will be going on a journey in a unique well-preserved canal house from the 17th century. Narrow corridors and stairs lead to historically decorated living quarters, kitchens and bedsteads, ending in what is literally the highlight of the museum: a complete church in the attic.

Our Lord in the Attic Museum Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder
This Catholic church dates from 1663. While it was prohibited to celebrate mass, the authorities turned a blind eye. Indeed, the church symbolises the characteristic (religious) tolerance of the Netherlands, established by the Dutch in the sixteenth century under Willem of Orange. Freedom of religion and of conscience are central themes at the museum today. It makes Our Lord in the Attic far more than a museum: it is a special place in which to contemplate and to experience. Extension Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder is the oldest museum in the city, second only to the Rijksmuseum. A unique monument from the Golden Age, it has been preserved largely due to initiatives taken by private individuals. In 2015, the monument was extended into an additional building at Oudezijds Voorburgwal 38, where the new entrance vestibule was established. The two buildings are connected to each other via an underground passage. Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder is now a proper in situ museum – where history is tangible and everything is old and authentic, where visitors can truly experience the building and its story, and where a link can even be established with current events.

Very well maintained, and uniquely Dutch is it's history and forming. It's very peaceful to sit in the benches facing the altar, and there are many interesting little side rooms and stories of the house's usage through the previous four centuries. I'm so glad that I visited, Our Lord in the Attic will intrigue anybody with even a passing interest in history.

Fascinating way to learn a piece of Amsterdam history. It encompasses a historic home and depicts how people lived and worked there, along with the surprising and fascinating hidden church within. Perfect for 1-2 hours.

Lived in the Amsterdam area my whole life but had never been here. Was on the ever do-it-again list but triggered by the bucket list of het Parool but once went. I should have done it a long time ago! What a nice museum. The church in the attic is great but also the rest of the buildings you come through are worth visiting. The audio tour is very good, informative and concise. Highly recommended!

Very fascinating history on why Catholics had “hidden” churches or more accurately house churches. Excellent use of technology to tell the story. Very steep stairs. Not accessible.

What a beautiful "Church" is this and what a beautiful tour with clear info. Nice people and highly recommended. Been in amsterdam for many years but you can't miss this one. How could they have made it all so beautiful in that time?

On a city trip with my two teenage sons aged 12 and 14, I planned this museum during our 'shopping afternoon', to add a little variety. And that turned out to be a top decision! We were very surprised: the mansion still looked exactly like it used to, via an audio tour we could explore at our own pace, very interesting all of them, and the church upstairs was simply fantastic! I would recommend this museum to anyone, don't understand that it is still relatively 'unknown'! Very friendly staff as well. In short: do it!
