This is on most Southern Utah bucket lists, you’ll find the local favorite one-two punch of Peek-a-Boo and Spooky Slot Canyons. These magnificent hikes, located in the Dry Fork area of the Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument make for a killer loop you can tackle in one afternoon of adventure. Once you’re in, all you have to do is walk through a scenic paradise of red and purple rock, arches, and narrow slot canyons.
From the trailhead, we will hike through Dry Fork Wash with moderate scrambling down some short cliffs. Once you’re off the cliff and into the sand dunes, you’ll hike along the creek wash until you see the mouth of Peek-a-Boo. Once you leave Peek-a-Boo, we will hike a little ways away to the entrance of Spooky Gulch. Scramble down a mellow rock face to get into the canyon. It soon tightens up, and you’ll be having a good time navigating the confines of this fun canyon.
Being on time is imperative, if you are more than 15 minutes late we will leave without you.

Peekaboo Gulch
The slot canyon is most famous because of the last 100 meters, before the junction with Dry Fork of Coyote Gulch - here the ravine cuts deeper into the sandstone, with a series of interlinked potholes, extravagant swirls and fins of rock, and several arches; these different openings and the many corners and crevices account for the curious name of this canyon.
Spooky Gulch
Only 10 inches wide at some points, Spooky is appropriately named. It is possible to travel almost halfway through before the first of two climbs, so go ahead and squeeze through as far as you dare.

Let me start with there are hundreds and maybe thousands of people who go out into this barren stretch of the desert and think these canyons are easily done. We saw many with families doing the trails with small children. They may be from more local areas, they may be more experienced adventurers. I am so incredibly grateful for the care, knowledge and security that we got from taking this tour from our guide Neil. These three canyons are over 5 miles of ups, downs, over and through some of the most narrow spaces. We did this on a day that was 93 degrees, no cloud cover. We hit some snags along the route. That’s where knowledgeable guides make the difference of you finishing and returning to safety or not. The skills and knowledge of Neil are truly unmatched. We walked into those canyons as strangers and I felt by the end of the day we had made a new friend. Along for the ride that day to learn the route was another guide T.C. He was also all about our safety and making sure that we had water and the knowledge we needed to successful meet our goal of finishing the canyons. We have great pictures, we have great stories, we have “canyon kisses”, and we have so much more respect for the desert and the skills it takes to enjoy it safely. I highly recommend this tour, this guide for anyone who wants to experience this. Pack a TON of water if you’re going on a hot, cloudless day and even if it’s perfect conditions. We felt so accomplished and proud of ourselves for finishing it even if we weren’t the most graceful about it all the way through!

Our guide Mojo=Jon was amazing. If it were not for Mojo I think I would be back in the a lot canyons still. Mojo was patient, helpful and extremely knowledgeable and talented. This trip is not for anyone who isn’t in decent shape, afraid of heights or active. I made it through the slot canyons but I would not have been able to do this without a ton of help from our guide Mojo. I would never do this alone without a guide. Mojo was an outstanding guide. We did this hike on Monday 5/12/25 in the afternoon. You need plenty of water and be in good physical condition. This is not something I would have booked if I had known the difficultly level. I am happy that we did this and if it were not for my guide Mojo and my husband who is very strong I would have never been able to accomplish this tour. We had an amazing time.

This tour is off the beaten path and is very unique. The experience is unforgettable. It is worth the voyage and my kids definitely learned a lot about slot canyons. Neil is a very experienced, calm, patient, and friendly tour guide. Very important to have a guide for this kind of tour because climbing in and out of the canyons can be a little scary.
