Chowrasta Market
Chowrasta Market in Penang is a lively hub that reflects the island’s rich daily life and culture. Every morning, housewives gather here not just to shop, but to catch up on gossip while browsing for fresh vegetables, meat, and fish. The market is known for its unique local offerings like hand-made spring roll skins, traditional snacks, and famous Penang nutmeg and pickles. The atmosphere buzzes with friendly chatter, the scent of spices, and the sizzle of street food being prepared. It’s more than just a market—it’s a community space where tradition, food, and friendships thrive every day.
Kek Lok Si Temple
During the British colonial era, the Chinese community in Penang flourished, practicing their faith with devotion and building many grand temples—some said to rival, if not surpass, those in China. One of the most renowned is Kek Lok Si, often described as the largest Buddhist temple complex in Southeast Asia, resembling a spiritual theme park. Built in 1985, visitors can learn about Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism while exploring its beautifully crafted pagodas, vibrant lanterns, intricate statues, and peaceful gardens. Don’t miss the breathtaking view of George Town from the temple grounds. As the locals say: “You haven’t been to Penang unless you’ve visited Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si.”

We were met by Goh who looked after us exceptionally well. My wife can’t walk far especially in the heat and Goh really went out of her way to look after her. After a tour of Georgetown and a spectacular Temple we visited Penang Hill where the views were amazing. After a quick view of the street art we visited Chew Jetty which was very interesting. We had planned to have lunch at the Hawker Centre but as it was very hot and my wife was quite tired we went back to the ship. Again Goh was really helpful in getting us dropped off as close to the ship as possible. An excellent tour.

We had a fantastic day, our guide Lester was amazing. He took us to the usual tourist attractions that we wanted to see then took us to see the sights that tourists never see, his English was flawless and his knowledge exceptional.

A great intro to Penang. Lester was a knowledgeable, friendly, effusive host with excellent insight into both the history, culture and politics of the city. He guided us with an expert touch: when we went up to Penang Hill, Lester knew all the shortcuts and best vantage points for great pictures away from the crowds. He explained the history behind the neighboring Thai and Burmese as we walked through the halls. And he navigated the stalls at New World Park like the expert he is, bringing us to the best prawn noodles and char kwey teow there. Lester also gave us some valuable tips for the rest of our trip. A day well spent with someone who obviously loves his city. Highly recommended--

Josh did an excellent job in sharing all the great sites in Penang. The flexibility of the schedule enabled us to stop for some great Malaysian food and shopping, too.

Experienced a very nice and interesting tour today. Both this organization and the guide were involved in this day from beginning to end. Today we had the travel guide Eng, a man with a lot of knowledge about the island of Penang and a very amical man. In other words this tour was definitely worth it!!!
