Chowrasta Market
Chowrasta Market in Penang is a lively hub that reflects the island’s rich daily life and culture. Every morning, housewives gather here not just to shop, but to catch up on gossip while browsing for fresh vegetables, meat, and fish. The market is known for its unique local offerings like hand-made spring roll skins, traditional snacks, and famous Penang nutmeg and pickles. The atmosphere buzzes with friendly chatter, the scent of spices, and the sizzle of street food being prepared. It’s more than just a market—it’s a community space where tradition, food, and friendships thrive every day.
Kek Lok Si Temple
During the British colonial era, the Chinese community in Penang flourished, practicing their faith with devotion and building many grand temples—some said to rival, if not surpass, those in China. One of the most renowned is Kek Lok Si, often described as the largest Buddhist temple complex in Southeast Asia, resembling a spiritual theme park. Built in 1985, visitors can learn about Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism while exploring its beautifully crafted pagodas, vibrant lanterns, intricate statues, and peaceful gardens. Don’t miss the breathtaking view of George Town from the temple grounds. As the locals say: “You haven’t been to Penang unless you’ve visited Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si.”

This was a fantastic experience for me, because I was able to see most of the attractions in Penang (George Town) in my wish list. My tour guide was Jeffery See, who is very friendly and knowledgeable. First we visited the Kek Lok Si Temple Complex, which is a few kilometers away from George Town. There are so many temples in this complex, that a minimum of 2 hours are necessary. The rest of the tour was a walking tour in the historical centre of George Town. We visited a few mosques, including the Aceh Street Mosque, and the fabulous Kapitan Keling Mosque. We also went to several old Chinese temples, all of which are richly decorated: the Sin Fah Thong Temple, the Khoo Kongsi Temple, the Choo Chay Keong Temple, the Temple of the Goddess of Mercy, and the Han Jiang Ancestral Temple. We also saw some picturesque street art in Armenia street, the Peh Kong Temple. and the Lim Jetty.

Initially booked this tour for the convenience of going around Penang to the popular sightseeing locations since there were so many places that were worth our time to visit. Firstly, the personal touch of the tour agency reaching out and providing details of the driver was exceptional. The driver even personally reached out with his contact way ahead of time. Secondly, the locations were flexible and not too time bearing. Usually there are time constraints due to the need to cover all places. This is probably one of the most relaxing tours! We got to choose where to go, the duration of our walkabout in that location and along the way, allowed to make changes to the itinerary. Next, the history lessons and easy conversations with the driver was one of my best experiences. He was super knowledgeable and even went out of the way to bring us to a popular coffee retailer (exclusive in Penang) to buy their famous coffee with different flavours apart from the usual white coffee. Think Irish, Tiramisu, Blue Mountain just to name a few! He not only gave us a really interesting history lesson about the locations and the overall Penang, we even got a download of the best places to eat different cuisines where the locals would dine! Highly recommended!
