A stress less fairy ride to Rottnest Island. Disappointed in Rottnest with the commercial influence, too much. Poor Quokkas.

We booked the SeaLink ferry from Perth to Thompson Bay return with a bike hire. We thoroughly enjoyed the slow cruise down the Swan River and then things got a little rough across the straight but the catamaran moves along quite quickly and it only takes 30 minutes. The crew was all very friendly and chill, bike pickup was painless and bikes were in good working order but have relatively small wheels and only 8 speeds. We cycled all the way around the island including out to Cathedral Rock and clocked 28km. We are fit, but still found the cycling quite hard to due limited gears on bikes, wind, and constantly rolling terrain. Factor in most people are also packing various amount of gear as well. I would rate the cycling as moderate and it was only 23' today, if it was 30' the majority of people would not be able to complete this entire loop. The other issue with Rotto is, although there are an unlimited number of beautiful beaches, virtually none have change rooms, showers, or drinking water. This make the logistics of cycling and snorkeling tricky. I would suggest pick your activity, either you cycle or you snorkel but not both. If you want to snorkel just forget bicycles and just ride the trolley busses with all your gear.

It was easy to book and they offered ferry tickets when everyone else was sold out. Easy to download tickets with clear instructions. The return time on the ticket wasn’t included so we had to ask about that, but it was fine.

The ferry was comfortable, and it all ran on time. We caught the 8:30am ferry, and chose a free hotel pick up which was pretty seamless. The captain had a good funny, well used, repertoire as we cruised towards Fremantle along the Swan River. Would happily travel with SeaLink again!

Great way to book a ferry ticket with more flexible cancellation than directly through Sealink’s site which is why I booked through Viator in case my plans changed. Very easy to exchange voucher for tickets at check-in and very smooth experience, highly recommend!

So this is where Perth comes to find its sanctuary – an island a few kilometres off the coast of Fremantle where there are zero cars – only buses and about 10,000 cyclists. It’s a lovely place, safe, interesting and has great beach’s and clean water. We took electric bikes and felt super smug as we zoomed up the hills (there are a few) ahead of panting traditional cyclists – and they were tough as it was hot at over 32c. I was amazed at how busy it was and especially how many people can be packed in the ferry – our cavernous boat took 400. A fun day.

We had a wonderful day on Rottnest, the views were stunning and did come across a few Quokkas. The Captain was very informative and humorous on the trip. Would recommend Sealink.
