Piran

Piran is one of the oldest and most beautiful Slovene towns with rich history and culture. Almost 500 years lasting Venetian influence has given this town an inimitable charm. Its culture heritage is not at home only in museums since the architectural and artistic pearls, which decorate the everyday life of the local people, can be found at every corner. Giuseppe Tartini, the world famous composer and violinist, who was born and raised in Piran, had a great impact on the town. Today, his bronze statue adorns the town’s main square together with Tartini’s house where visitors can admire one of his violins. The Tartini Square is surrounded by majestic buildings, such as the richly decorated Municipal Palace, Tartini Theatre, Maritime Museum, Aquarium, Marine Biological Station, Baroque House and Apollonio Palace. On the hill above the town is the biggest and most important church, the Church of Saint George, which offers a wonderful view. Piran’s town wall, narrow streets, fishermen’s nets, compact houses that rise up the slope and beautiful sea will give you the feeling of walking through a painting. On this panoramic trip along the Slovene coast you will also visit the coastal towns of Portorož, Izola and Koper, where a tourist guide will tell you about the main attractions, historical facts and local tradition.

Our one-day tour of Slovenia was an absolute delight. Our two tour guides, Dajan and Dean, were exceptional and kept us entertained throughout the entire experience with their engaging conversation. We were particularly impressed by their enthusiasm and genuine love for their country. The vans were spotless and surprisingly comfortable, making the journey enjoyable. We highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Trieste.

As planned, we visited the city for a one day trip, from Izola (where we rented an appartment). The old town and harbour is a fantastic historical place, with the St. George church on the top. From the church the view is stunning. We visited allmost everything in one day, discovered the narrow streets of Piran.

We decided to drive to Piran, one of the beach towns along the south western coast of Slovenia about 30-40 mins from Trieste in Northern Italy. Piran looked the most attractive to us of the coastal towns (others being Izola and Koper) and thankfully we were not upset about our decision. We found parking just outside of town on a hill (about 15 mins walk from the marina and the central square). We explored around the back streets behind the square towards the beach at the southern end of town. There were so many people on the stony beaches. There was a small chapel also on the beach called the Church of the Madonna della Salute. We climbed up to another church on the hill, this time named the Church of St. George with a grassy courtyard and a view over the town and the beach below. From the church’s vantage point, we could see all the way over to Trieste and its lighthouse on the coast. From here, we walked up to the Fortress walls. At the end of the 13th century when Piran came under Venetian rule, the town started to grow. It was then surrounded by a new wall which dates back to 1470-1533. (We read this from the plaque outside the walls of the fortress). We paid 3 Euros each to get into the fort and climb up to the battlements. We continued along the battle keep to the end. We could not only look over the whole town but also down onto the stony beach and the clear blue and turquoise ocean beyond. Just an amazing view! Back down into town, we stopped for an ice-cream on the square under a canvas cover. It was the perfect coolant on a very hot but fun day. I would encourage anyone to visit Piran if you have 2-3 hours to spare.

Dejan met us across the street from the cruise port in Trieste. He was driving a nice van that could transport 7 guests, although there were only 4 of us. We left town to head into Slovenia. It was a nice ride with some beautiful views. Dejan filled us in on some of the history and politics of the area. We thought Portorose was charming and a welcome relief from the crowds on other excursions. We did climb up and down some steep steps and navigated a few narrow and steep alleys. It was picturesque and the promenade was gorgeous.
