Join The Red Road Tour for a once-in-a-lifetime hike, followed by a wine, cheese, and cured meat tasting with a local and fully licensed guide.
We will walk in the footsteps of the Etruscans, the ancient people who inhabited the ancient lands of Marrema, immersing ourselves in the vie cave (ancient streets dug into the tufaceous rock that reaches a depth of 25 meters) and following a circular route of about 6 km (3.7 miles.)
Experience the secret walkways, caves, and tombs of these people who dug the paths to connect with the necropolises, also known as the ancient cities of the dead.
The tour will end with a visit to a private historic cellar (featured in National Geographic) with a wine tasting and sampling of local cured meats and cheeses.
The entire excursion will be an experiential journey that will involve the 5 senses, allowing you to experience and savor all the history and uniqueness of a territory.

Our hike will be about 3 hours as we descend to the bottom of the valley below and follow the course of the river for a short stretch. We will then go back up to the plateau in front of Pitigliano through unique historical monuments known as Vie Cave. These are real canyons dug by hand by the Etruscan people for religious and road purposes.

We had a really great tour with Lorenzo at the "Vie Cava" in Pitigliano, during which we got exciting insights into the Etruscan life. Lorenzo is a very sympathetic guide who has adapted to our speed and left enough room for questions and explanations. During the 3-hour hike through various "Vie Cava" we could not only admire nature but also understand the impressive canyon-like paths and their formation and imagine what life may have looked like 3000 years ago. The subsequent wine tasting in an old cellar of the old town is authentic and gives another insight into how the cellars under Pitigliano may look. The place itself offers beautiful narrow streets and many small shops, bars and restaurants that have settled down over the years and give the place its extra charm.

Since we had a full day available to explore and were interested in the history of Pitigliano and the surrounding region (and we enjoy hiking!), I arranged a "hybrid" tour with Lorenzo, which he customized for our fitness level, combining highlights of the trails and sites he thought we would enjoy. While making plans for our tour, Lorenzo was always very responsive (despite the 8 hour time difference!) using WhatsApp. Lorenzo is a very enthusiastic guide, who clearly loves the region and is eager to share his passion. Sections of the trails were quite challenging (hiking poles are recommended - - I have collapsible carbon fiber poles that are easy to pack), but definitely worth it, although I'm sure he can plan a hike that is easier than what we did. The tour included (for an additional fee) a tour of (and lunch at) an "underground" off-the-grid winery owned by a friend of Lorenzo, a young female winemaker who is passionate about her work, and it was very interesting and enjoyable. This is a beautiful and fascinating area of Italy that is not (yet!) inundated with tourists, and I highly recommend taking a Red Road tour to explore the region before tourists ruin it!

AMAZING. Lorenzo is an incredible guide, full of good conversation, knowledge and positivity. The hike itself is a marvel filled with history, Lorenzo has the answer to all of your questions! We walked the via cave, and learnt about their history and development. Lastly, the subsequent tasting consisted of high quality ingredients (wine, cheese, salami, wild bore jerky etc etc) in authentic cantina with a gorgeous view and great conversation. Overall this has been a highlight of my trip (Nonna and my sister both agree). This is a must see!

Extraordinary experience with Lorenzo as guide! He accompanied us to discover the Etruscan hollow streets near Pitigliano, telling us the history and secrets of these ancient routes in a passionate and engaging way. After the walk, he took us to a cellar dug into the tuff where we tasted typical local products, all exceptional. Lorenzo has demonstrated a deep knowledge of the territory and a genuine passion for his work. Highly recommended for those who want to live an immersive and unforgettable experience!

We had a wonderful experience with Lorenzo. An afternoon hike with emphasis on the historic and spiritual nature of an ancient route. Following the hike we were treated to wine cheese and meats in an ancient wine making cellar. Lorenzo was knowledgeable and well informed. Great afternoon!

Lorenzo lead us on a wonderful hike through the via cave and was very informative about the history of the area and specific sites. Walking the carved paths was truly magical. The wine tasting afterwards was in an amazing place, very much worth seeing.

Our time with Lorenzo Terzoli was so personable and humanizing. His gift to us this precious day far outstripped making sure we did not get lost in woods of Maremma or stumble around uninformed. He left us with an appreciation of the men and women and boys and girls who have graced this space for three or four millennia. And he inspired us to hope with him for the continued flourishing of this most beautiful place on earth.

Lorenzo was fantastic. He was a knowledgeable, kind, friendly and fun guide. He planned a wonderful route on and off the Via Cava with a delightful end in the wine cellar. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Hope we get to visit again.

If you are looking for a quality excursion this is really the right one. Lorenzo is a very prepared environmental Guide, he will be able to blend the pleasure of walking, to discover an enchanted territory, the history of the vie cava and the tuff villages, will answer your every curiosity in a pleasant and spontaneous way, will make your children laugh and will talk to them in a simple way to make them appreciate what they see. The final tasting in a historic winery whose visit alone is worth the trip, will be a convivial moment and an experience of flavors and aromas in the territory. Don’t think of the classic “guided tour” where they just provide you with pre-packaged information; Lorenzo knows how to build relationships and transmit the passion for his land that you too will love deeply.
