We had an absolutely unforgettable day spent touring the fascinating ruins of Pompeii and then even climbing to the summit of Mt. Vesuvius! The sites themselves are truly world-class and breathtakingly amazing. Our tour guide, Marius, really took our great trip to an excellent one. He was incredibly informative, providing us with valuable insights and some great jokes along the way!

Thoroughly enjoyed my tour day with Anna, who has been guiding visitors for decades. Not only was her British accent easy to understand, her many asides to the main points as well as her general tips and pointers with regard to being a tourist in the region were always entertaining as well as useful.

I booked this tour thinking it would be a wholesome, educational day and it definitely was fulfilling and educational. So as they say in Italian, andiamo! We arrived at the designated meeting point early and we were divided into groups. There were A LOT of people there going on different tours from the same company. So be mindful that the group you get sorted into is the correct one. They called out the group numbers by time. We had to be there by 7:15 AM and that's when our group was called. We then walked over to the nearby park to meet our bus that would take us on our journey. We had 2 bathroom stops along the way. One stop when we were going and the other when we were returning. We started at Pompeii, where the vibe quickly shifted from “vacation mode” to “oh wow, history is intense.” We were given audio pieces so we could here the archeological guide, (I think his name was Michael) somehow made a 2,000-year-old disaster feel weirdly engaging—like part documentary, part drama series, with just enough humor to keep us emotionally afloat. Walking through the ruins is a surreal experience that photos just don’t capture. It's a city that is literally frozen in time. You’re just casually standing in ancient streets thinking, “this is… a lot.” Some of the highlights of this part of the tour were the famous plastered body casts of the people and animals that fell in 79 AD, the forum, and the villas that still retained some of their colorful mosaics. I definitely want to visit Pompeii again. I definitely wanted to see the Cave Canum Mosaic ("Beware of the Dog") and the Casa dei Vettii. You need a full week or more to explore and see everything. After being fully immersed in history and ash-covered reality, we moved into the second act: PIZZA!. We stopped on the way up Mt. Vesuvius to this restaurant called Kona. Since this was a prepaid excursion, we didn’t use a menu. We had a pizza, an appetizer which were mini fried rice balls, a mini calzone, and a piece of cake for dessert. It’s not just any pizza either. We’re talking proper Neapolitan pizza with a stunning view that makes you question every life decision that didn’t previously involve carbs and Italian scenery. Starting that part of the day like that? Bold. Correct. Life-changing. Spiritually necessary, honestly. The kind of meal that resets your entire emotional state in 12 minutes flat. The views from the restaurant make the lunch even more exhilarating. It’s definitely NYer approved. We can be fussy about our pizza. Then again, there’s nothing to be fussy about since Italy is where it originated from, Right? Just when I thought the day had found its natural peak… Now it's time to hike to the peak. SURPRISE: Mount Vesuvius. Yes. The same volcano that turned two towns into time capsules in 79 A.D. The hike is described as “manageable,” which is technically true if you enjoy uphill walking while bargaining with your lungs and legs. It’s about 30 minutes of steady incline, during which I experienced: personal growth mild regret and a deep appreciation for the pizza that got me into this situation But the summit? Unreal. Views for days. Worth every dramatic pause, heavy breath, and “why am I like this?” moment. We also made a stop on the way down at Terre Vesuviane, which was a really nice surprise. They had souvenirs, samples of everything (including some of the best limoncello I’ve had), plus chocolates and non-alcoholic options. Very easy, very enjoyable stop. A few real notes: It’s a LONG, FULL day. Like “I have lived three separate lives” long It can feel rushed, but also… you’re doing Pompeii + pizza + volcano in one day, so what do you expect? The guides absolutely make it—funny, organized, and just the right amount of chaotic. A special shout-out to my tour guide Chiara and driver Danilo. She kept everything running smoothly, stayed behind with my mom (a senior who couldn’t make the climb), and made sure we were all taken care of. Danilo got us back safe in one piece, which honestly deserves its own 5-star review. Final verdict: If you want a calm, relaxing, slow-paced day… this is not that. If you want carbs, culture, cardio, and a story you’ll retell dramatically for years—this is your tour. Would I do it again? Yes. But I’d emotionally prepare for the uphill part… and maybe eat slightly less pizza. (No promises.) Know Before You Go: Bring cash/Euros. You don’t get much time for souvenirs at Pompeii, so grab them early—either right before the site visit starts or after when it ends. At Pompeii, you’ll be grouped and given audio devices for the archaeological guide, so use that transition time wisely to purchase them. You can also buy souvenirs on Mt. Vesuvius. Wear proper hiking shoes or boots. Sneakers (like Skechers) are okay, but not ideal—the trail on Mount Vesuvius is loose, slanted, and slippery on the way down. I kept slipping on the descent and immediately regretted my footwear choices. Bring a bottle of water. You will get thirsty on the hike, ESPECIALLY if you take this hike during the warmer months. Walking sticks are highly recommended if you’re older or want extra stability. Also, be aware this tour is physically demanding and time-structured—if mobility is an issue, this may be challenging, especially since you must return to the buses within a set timeframe (about a 30-minute hike back down from wherever you are on the mountain trail). Needless to say, this tour is NOT wheelchair accessible. And last but not least, dont skip leg day. You’ll thank me later!

Great day trip from Rome to Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius. The bus was very comfortable, and the driver and tour guide, Anna, were excellent. We had expert Pompeii guides once we got there, and lunch was terrific—lots of food. The hike up Vesuvius allowed for great views of the water. Highly recommend doing this trip! The trip lasted from 7:30am to 8:15pm.

Eduardo, our bus tour guide, was really funny and informative. He is a caring person who is passionate about his job. The geologist, who grew up in Pompeii, was terrific on our hike around Mt Vesuvius with geological information. It’s about a 45 minute hike up and back (1.5 hours total) with several stops along the way, slight incline. Wear comfortable shoes and it was chilly and windy- wear layers and maybe a hat that ties. Nikola was our archeologist tour guide in Pompeii. This was our son’s favorite part of the entire trip to Italy. He brought us through the least crowded way, showing us incredible ruins, arenas, markets, ancient “restaurants” so to speak, and the forum. He answered all of our questions and told us many wonderful stories with passion about the people who lived there. I highly recommend this tour! We arrived back at Piaza del Popolo at about 8pm.

We had an absolutely fantastic trip to Pompeii and Vesuvius with City Wonders, it was truly one of the highlights of our time in Italy. Our guide Laura was amazing, so knowledgeable and passionate, and she made everything so interesting to listen to. Her love of Ancient Rome and the surrounding area really came through, and she was also such a lovely, funny lady who made the whole day enjoyable from start to finish. A special thank you as well to Cesare, our driver. We felt completely safe and comfortable with his driving all day. It must have been such a long day for him, but he was wonderful throughout and always welcoming and professional. Rosalia, our guide in Pompeii, was also excellent, again incredibly knowledgeable and engaging. She made sure we saw all the key points of interest, and her pacing was perfect, giving us time to take everything in without ever feeling rushed. The lunch stop was also perfect, a beautiful setting with stunning views, very tasty food, and the staff were so kind and friendly. It was a lovely chance to relax and enjoy the surroundings before our walk up Mt Vesuvius. The limoncello stop at the end was a great finishing touch, such a funny and enjoyable experience, and a very tasty treat to round off the day. Thank you to the whole team for making this tour so special and memorable — we would highly recommend City Wonders to anyone wanting to visit Pompeii and Vesuvius.

Although Pompeii was very busy, I still really enjoyed this tour. Our bus guide Flavio was very friendly and entertaining, and our Pompeii guide Lilly was great at directing us through the crowds to show as many highlights of Pompeii as she could in the time that we had. She had a good sense of humor and had a lot of interesting information about Pompeii. The hike up Mount Vesuvius was interesting but might be too long and steep for some people. The pizza lunch was also very good and the stop at the limoncello stand was fun.

Absolutely fabulous tour! Our main guide, Viviana, our driver Maximiliano and our Pompeii guide Elena were all excellent. Viviana provided so much information about the places we visited, as well as the surrounding areas we drove through and told us about the specialties of the different areas. Maximiliano drove the coach through roads I wouldn't even attempt with my car! And Elena was very good with the Pompeii tour, and she clearly enjoys her job a lot. It is a very long day, but completely worth it! Pizza lunch was huge portions and delicious from appetiser to dessert. The hike up Vesuvius was a bit challenging for my friend, but even at 72 with a replacement knee she made it to the top. All in all a superb experience.

Our guide to Pompeii, Francesco, was excellent. He filled two hours with the sights and history you go to Pompeii for and answered every question I had before I had a chance to ask them.
