My tour of Pompeii was unfortunately a low point of my trip to Italy. I had high hopes after learning about Pompeii in my Latin class in high school many years ago, and unfortunately this tour didn’t provide me with much at all. I had already toured Herculaneum with Askos and had an absolutely stellar tour where I learned so much from an archeologist. I left my tour from Pompeii, only hearing about 10% of what I learned on my Herculaneum tour and with very little structure or plan. We went into two buildings. I am 99% sure my guide was not an archeologist, and there were 20 people on the tour when the cap is 15. I am grateful that I got to skip the line because it was packed, but I left the tour not knowing more than I did already, and having to explain things to my friend to fill in the gaps, not having a better understanding of the layout of the park, but I definitely knew where the exit was because that was pointed out constantly. My guide was very nice, enigmatic, and confident, and I believe with proper training could do a great tour, but the vast discrepancy in tours between Herculaneum and Pompeii shows that there is not much being done to train or quality check Askos’s guides work and to help them be better. I was deeply disappointed in having spent my time and money on this. You only get to go to Pompeii once, and it honestly is a big and confusing place. I got a guide because I thought it would be worth the expense and enhance the experience and really I wish I had gotten a book and gone alone.

The archaeologist who led our group was fantastic (yellow coat/pink umbrella). Unfortunately forgot her name. Her energy was amazing and she pointed out so many fantastic things at Pompeii. She had so much insight to life in Ancient Pompeii and her passion was clearly evident. It made the tour fly by and we learned so much! Highly recommend!
