Let's face it, no one should visit Hobart without stopping by Port Arthur, especially if you have not been there before. This is not the first time we have visited but there has been significant upgrade since we last visited. A lot of stories of convicts, commanders, workers alike which make the reality of the history of its place come alive. Included in your entry ticket is a cruise which goes to the Isle of Dead and back again with vivid and interesting commentary on board. The rest of the heritage site can be enjoyed by yourself as they have an audio that you can listen to on your phone while you walk around. It is truly a place full of stories that you would not want to miss. We spent about 4 hours there. We are contemplating going back tomorrow as the entry ticket allows you to spend 2 consecutive days there.

We did the experience tour tonight set us up for our visit to Port Arthur with Tony. He was excellent. We were a large group of 40+ and he managed our group beautifully and shared a great general knowledge of the history. Later in the afternoon we caught up with him again and he was happy to share more information and also some local restaurant recommendations. The boat cruise was a fabulous way to end our trek around Port Arthur and we are back tonight to do the Ghost tour.

A great day out. A beautiful location with a sad history. A full day is needed to discover all there is to see. The boat ride and tour guides were very informative. The walk up to the lookout was worth it. Well maintained grounds and a must see for visits to Tasmania

The whole experience was fantastic. The history was interesting but had an eeriness about it. The memorial for the victims of the shooting in 1996 was beautifully thought out and done.

Visiting Port Arthur was one of the most impactful experiences of my trip to Tasmania. The site is very well preserved, and the information provided made the convict history feel real and personal rather than distant. Walking through the ruins helped me better understand Australia’s founding and the harsh realities of life for convicts.

My wife and I went with open minds having always wanted to visit but unsure about how we felt about the dark history of the place including the sad events of 1996 at the site To our surprise the new look building with the historic information before you entered the site was a great start , once in the site we visited the 1996 memorial area of the events of the port Arthur massacre and the old cafe where most of the lives were lost The Port Arthur historical site itself was really interesting and I was really glad to see that the site was being restored and each individual site was being continuously preserved and worked on , I also enjoyed and loved the gardens they were amazing and full of life Overall it’s a 10 out of 10 for me and anyone visiting Tasmania should visit this amazing location of Australian history

It's quite a drive from Hobart to Port Arthur, but we called in to Richmond for a cuppa en route to break up the trip. I'd booked our tickets online, and the tour included a cruise. We took a picnic and ate it at a picnic table right in front of the penitentiary building, then decided to take the cruise first. It's a great thing to do, to see the place from the water and hear about the history of the area. Then we spent about five hours talking our time wandering and looking over everything. The place is unnaturally calm and peaceful, not something I'd have thought I was experience at a place notorious for its unpeaceful past. My favourite was the superintendent's cottage, a much-restored building, but one in which I could imagine myself have a very nice holiday indeed. The gift shop is very well stocked, and we all came home with a trinket or two. The one hour 15 minute drive back to Hobart was silent as we reflected on all we'd seen. Very worthwhile. All ages would enjoy this place.

Absolutely brilliant. So much history. Plan at a minimum for a full 1/2 - 3/4 day and try to include the Isle of the Dead boat cruise. Can even sneak in a cheeky beer on the boat.
